Hi

Will Samsung upgrade the Android OS in Samsung Galaxy S I9000 and Tab P1000 to Gingerbread 2.4 (the successor of 2.3, that is), officially I mean?

Also, what about honeycomb 3.0, will be run decently on this hardware? Recently the rumor of it only supporting dual cores was dismissed by Google. But will the performance be adequate:

A8 1ghz single core
478mb ram
2gb internal memory
16gb inbuilt memory
16/32 gb memory card

Will these OSes run fine? Will the difference be huge?

Android 2.4 is Ice Cream not Gingerbread. To me 2.2 Froyo is pretty excellent on Tab and m loving it. It can do everything so i dont feel any need for upgrade.

No chance of Honeycomb...Google hasn't released the code and most prob wont
And right now, Gingerbread is doubtful...how can u even think abt 2.4???

Gingerbread should come for Galaxy S , there is already a leaked ROM, I guess the delay is due to Touchwiz 4.0

Android 2.4 Gingerbread update due April with dual-core app support | Android Community

2.3 and 2.4 are Gingerbread.

AFAIK Samsung Galaxy S is powerful enough to run 2.3 and 2.4. And all current HTC phones Desire and upwards will get a 2.4 update.

3.0 = Honeycomb

3.1 = Ice Cream

Also, Google said the recommended is a 1ghz dual core, not the minimum!

Android 2.4 Gingerbread would run Honeycomb apps

Install Gingerbread on Galaxy S [Official]

I am also talking of the P1000 tab. I want to install 2.4 on both my galaxy s phone and galaxy tab. I am hoping that it should be fine considering gingerbread is more or less official and considering HTC will do it for their phones. But want to know more on this issue as well! :)

So if the recommended is 1GHz, will no new budget phone ever come with IceCream or ANY newer version of android for that matter?

If thats true, I dont think there will be a successor to LG Optimus the 11k one for a loooong looooooong time.

The recommended is a dual core or above, preferably 1Ghz plus dual core. However, the minimum is uncertain at the moment.

HTC wildfire with 528mhz won't get 2.3 but Wildfire S with 600 mhz will get 2.3.

And since 2.3 and 2.4 are both gingerbread, I think I read something of the like that if you can run 2.3, 2.4 should run too.

Honeycomb of course will be 3.0 and will be a different ball game altogether. To run it perfectly, we will probably need at least 1-1.5ghz dual cores! But I want to know whether it will run for the first few months after its launch, in a decent manner.

And of course, 2.4 I want to run just fine :)

Also, 2.3 and 2.4 are for mobile phones. 3.0 honeycomb is only for tabs and won't release on mobile phones!

But I doubt it would run acceptably on a mere 600 MHz CPU :D

1GHz seems to be the bare minimum even for acceptable experience!

Have you tried Honeycomb ? I have used it extensively and am in a better position to tell you right now that the UI is absolutely unoptimized for smaller screens. Getting it running and actually making sense to use is completely different.

2.4 is basically a bug fix release of 2.3 , nothing major has changed.

Don't worry... you'll get Gingerbread on the SGS. Re Honeycomb , straight forward no in this form. The improvements from Honeycomb will come to a future release of Android meant for smartphones.

PS : Fragmentation is going to go up to a whole new level in the near future ... you'll know what i mean soon :)

Yes it will . Sure applications from the Tegra Zone won't work.. but then that is why they had to make a separate app store for dual core devices. They cannot afford to have Honeycomb only on highend devices. The maximum sales are always in the low-mid range.

The core OS experience will be fine.. but seriously speaking. Don't count on Samsung to give you a Honeycomb update. AFAIK , there is no work going on internally as of now to bring Honeycomb to the 7" Tab. I'm sure there are unofficial ports out there though...

Hey can you elaborate more on the bug fix thing from 2.3 to 2.4 and fragmentation (heard about this wrt Android)

2.4 is basically a release which will incorporate all the changes from 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.3.3 into one firmware and push it all out. In addition , it will have some enhancements from Honeycomb.

Re fragmentation.. it entails a longer write up, maybe later :)
