Will this work?

Adept
Here's the deal

On my current comp i had 2 hard disks - a 32GB IDE and a 160GB sata

A month back i broke my motherboard's SATA port. :ashamed: so i have been running only on the IDE as of the last 30 days.

On that sata HDD i had installed quite a few apps.

I will be assembling a new system on monday. And i recently came into possession of a external HDD. S

So here is my plan :

1. Create 2 partitions on the external drive, X: and Y: and copy the entire C: and D: drive contents to X: and Y: respectively

2. Assemble the new system with the old SATA connected, but booting from X: (if possible thru bios i will rename it to C: )

3. Uninstall all the apps on the old SATA.

4. Plug a New 120GB internal SATA in, do a fresh install of XP on that, restore My Documents and All save game directories and of course D: drive

5. Reinstall all apps that were uninstalled
So.... will this work? and any alternative suggestions? My new cabby is a CM690, so thats why i am avoiding using the IDE disk in the new comp.

sounds very long winded :p i read it twice and am still not sure what you are trying to do .

why dont you just install xp and apps on the new sata 120gb drive and then plug in the old drives and delete whatever is not necessary.

ok, i guess it does seem a bit lon winded

anyway, will be carrying out this "experiment" on monday, will post the results then :)

Do a fresh instal of xp, install watever apps u want to. Restore the My documents files and the save games file to the respective folders (some games will store the save games in My document, some in the user> Application Data> ... ). It'll work, thats wat i do.

Copying files from an active partition to another drive wont simply make it bootable. You will need to make a clone image of the original partition.

Create boot CD from UBCD for Windows

Then use Self Image to create a backup of orginal HDD and use it to restore the partition to another drive

Creating a backup image will require extra space of course

Alternative is suggested by Saiyan

saiyan's suggestion is probably the easiest to implement, but what the heck, its a free world, will try ur suggestion too Kuantum....
