THE WORLD OF FORMULA ONE is gearing up for a supercomputer war. After AMD entered the world of racing and aligned with Ferrari and later with FIA, super computers started to become an everyday thing in a world where thousandths of a second mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Right now, dedicated super-computers are present in Ferrari HQ in Maranello (AMD Opteron, Italy), BMW.Sauber in Hinwill (Intel Xeon, Switzerland), Toyota in Köln (Intel Itanium 2, Germany) and now AT&T Williams F1 is introducing a nameless supercomputer that hits right at spot 125 on Top500.org super-computing charts.

There was a article about this in Digit few months back (before the start of the current F1 season). They mentioned that BMW Sauber has the best supercomputer on board and the results can be seen this season. BMW Sauber have really improved this season and Hiedfield and Kubica have been among the top 8 in many races.

Trust people who dont know a thing to screw it up.

BMW are not doing well this season because of some super computer.
They are doing well, because they always had the capability. And they have loads of money to hire the best people, use the best components, build the best facilities and test as much as they want.

Having a super computer does help. But not as much as Digit says. It is ridiculous.

Yup, that's true. A supercomputer alone can't do anything. An F1 car has large no. of parts and every part contributes to the overall performance of the car.

It's a tech magazine, so it's not so much as they 'don't know a thing' but more about which angle they will pitch being a tech magazine :P

Btw it was CHIP that carried the article. Don't subscribe to Digit, so no idea if they carried it too.

True a supercomputer isnt the most brillant thing a team can have but it is quite important. It can help vastly in Aerodynamics and the BMW team along with having the best wind tunnel among all the teams(which was incidentally built by sauber before being bought by bmw) has a very aero efficient car, and the sauber's of the old days were always very aero efficient(considering their budget)
