I hate to say this, but microsoft has done pretty good work on windows 7, and it "may" end up as a linux killer.

All in all, Windows 7 is shaping up well. It's a far more modest release than Vista was, but it's no worse for that. The new OS introduces a compelling combination of welcome innovations and much-needed polish, and that's exactly what Microsoft needs right now. Vista's foundation was solid, and Windows 7 just makes it better. And that Vista foundation hasn't gone away—if you couldn't stand Vista's UI (whether it's because you didn't like Explorer, Aero, Control Panel, UAC, or anything else), Windows 7 is unlikely to do much to help, as it builds on the same UI. If Vista's hardware demands were too steep, Windows 7 will likely cause you the same grief, as its hardware demands match. And if Vista didn't work with a program or device you need to use, Windows 7 will offer no salvation, as its compatibility is virtually identical.

Awesome write up.. and seeing this Win7 won't do wonders .. Though its a bit better than Vista :P

If MS keeps it cheap wouldn't mind getting it.
Lets hope the "Linux Killer" doesn't have as many varieties as Vista and is cheaper that it was priced else I think that would be a major Win 7 killer.

+1. If the price is not ridiculously high like vista, I'll definitely get a genuine copy.

It is good news, but didn't want to get bashed up by Linux lovers here :P

even i have huge hopes from windows 7. Lets see if it deem good for netbbok, lappy, desktop and the smaller older market of download rigs.

i like windows only for its friendliness (family memebrs can use it easily), ease of use. I take OS like any other gadget. if linux can beat windows in it, I switch to linux without blinking my eyes.

as of now GO WINDOWS 7...

PS: linux users, i aint saying linux is bad, i am saying MS doing a god job with Win7

regards
neo

@DS: that is an excellent arstechnica link. i learned of the cool new shortcuts (Win+leftarrow etc for widescreen).

their impression seems to match mine that performance isnt that much improved... i wonder why/how many people are saying its "much better"... again, gotta wait for the RC/RTM to reserve final judgement...

Windows vista was 3yrs ago, the same hardware requirement discounted by the price drop in 3yrs..Just try and remember how many new hardware items, procs and motherboards and platforms have come and gone..So even keeping the same requirement has been a big achievement..you can easily get a cheap pc thats win 7 compatible, we all know this, then why the fuss??
Quoting thousands of links wont change the fact that win 7 works much better that anything that has had the Microsoft tag on it..How how good is this? Much better that any OS that offers the same amt of features, application compatibility, drivers and loads more goodies...

I think i just proved it to you that its working better, it just that yo rig is much to good for the difference to be felt..:cool2:

ok, agreed. imo too, win7 is looking good and a real threat to both linux and osx marketshare and mindshare :)
