Windows 7 will be using the bigger version kernel of minWin.

People just love making random speculative statements and use words like "will be" instead of "may be", so I'll make one of my own, heh:

I'm guessing Win7 will use the same Vista kernel with bugfixes and performance/stability improvements and maybe minor new features...

They will just change/update the UI (we already saw sneak peek demo of multitouch) and use a new name even though I feel it's just going to be "Vista R2" (the functionality not the name) and will have the same effect like SP2 had for XP.

By the time 2010 comes, Win7 (even Vista) will run silky smooth on current/entry-level hardware at the time :P and everybody (except the open source zealots) will fall in love with it

There you go, my 2 cents of speculation

I wonder what people mean by "the same kernel" or "different kernel". The kernel is constantly being tweaked. Pretty much like the Linux kernel. Obviously the basic architecture of the kernel will not change. Vista's kernel was different from previous NT kernels in that certain driver model changes occurred (from the 2k model). The driver model is not being changed by all accounts (probably will stick to it for the next decade or so I'd guess).

How often does a kernel change massively? Well, look at the Linux kernel. The big change was from 2.4 to 2.6. The 2.4 was somewhat primitive (couldn't run on more than a few processors while its competitors all could, was not preemptive, something Solaris and Windows have had since the mid 90's etc). 2.6 solves much of that. And as a result, 2.6 is running pretty much without massive architectural changes since its release. No mention of a 2.7 and Linus himself has said that there may never be one.

Windows 7 will be using the bigger version kernel of minWin. They were really taken aback by the cirticizm of Vista for the large kernel.

I want to cry. I want to cry so much.

For the last time, I have a request to all non core-OS/kernel devs - STOP CONFUSING PEOPLE ABOUT MINWIN!!!! AND ABOUT THE WINDOWS KERNEL!!!

^^hahaha

Some guys just get hanged up on a name(minwin, iphone, etc) and throw out the most amazing BS that'l make u go overboard and pull out your hair..Its a talent..

Wats a BIG version of minwin and small version?? really..

I used to watch many of the videos on Channel 9 and other blogs during Vista's development, lots of cool "inside" stuff about its internals etc... like the new networking stack, not to mention AERO Glass heh.

Too bad we might not (but hope we do) see such information during Win7 development because of their info lockdown....
