Piracy happens because microsoft keeps unreasonable prices for its os versions even for developing countries. XP was never so much costly like Vista and 7.

Imagine the scenario if out of the ten buyers, the key no is misused or unintentionally leaked out by one! Wont the whole license be blacklisted?

Yes it will. So incentive to keep key private is with the buyers :)

If they share it with more users than authorized, the key gets blocked.

I have asked my friend regarding all the above doubts. He says that we will be given soft copy of Win 7 at first (32 or 64 bit is still to be confirmed) - boxed DVD will be sent after few weeks. I expect to get 2 Keys with each key valid for 5 installations (making a total of 10 installations). You would be able to use a key for 120 days without it being counted. So if before 120 days you decide to reinstall the OS then you may do so without worrying about re-activation.

....

then it is not for retail use for people like us. take this usage scenario for example.

your friend gets 2 keys. you get 1. 8 others share from either you or your friends keys. everyone activates their copies after 30 days. so now both keys are fully used.

now if anyone's mobo gets fried or decides to change the hardware on his pc sometime after this, he wont be able to activate his copy. He will get error saying all licenses are activated and you should buy additional licenses.

Then that person will catch you or your friend saying you cheated them.

There might be some way of recycling licenses used, but that person will definitely have to go through your friend in the end loosing one or two days in the process.

In the end this is like paying for a pirated key which you can download from anywhere.

Otoh, a retail package key can be activated 10 (or so) number of times. So isnt it better to get a retail package and be on the safe side? If you want a genuine deal why bother beating around the bush, pay once and enjoy for next 5 years or till another good windows version comes.

Hopefully you understood what i'm trying to tell you. :)

I am planning to get Win 7 through some friend of mine who is eligible for volume licensing. He will get 10 licenses for 17,000 (flat) and this will include MS Office too. If people are interested then I can try. Apart from me I will need 9 more buyers and then we can get Win 7 Prof. + MS Office 2007 standard for just Rs. 1,700/-. What do you say?

Hi I am interested. Please count me in!,
Thanks,

And yes they do kind of force us. That's why they monopolise the market. To force us to buy their stuff even if it is insanely priced. We just find a way out of this trap.

that's ridiculous. you do know that there are free alternatives out there right?

you pirate their software because you don't want to pay the price, but you want the product anyway. guess what... you don't get to decide what the price of their software is. just like you don't get to decide the price of any other product in the market.

pirate it if you want, but don't come up with stupid rationalizations about why you are doing so, and don't delude yourself into thinking that it's not wrong to do it.

US price is 399$ for Win 7 Ultimate.. comes around 19k Indian price.. but for India the price should be around 17k or so.

checked with both microsoft and retailers and both have no clue what the pricing is and retailers have no stock yet of win7. they are saying

"Today is the launch day. we may get the packs in two days".

Has MS changed Volume licensing.... for windows 7

AFAIK... They introduced volume licensing through KMS(Key Managment Server) and MAK (Multiple Activation Key) ....

Thorugh KMS... what happens is if you have KMS key for say Windows Server Data center edition then you can activate a whole subnets of lower edition followed by enterprise standard server and then vista business Enterprise Ed... only drawback is it needs activation every six months and to activate you donot have to contact microsoft but rather KMS on your network... This is how we activate machine running vista business enter. on our VPN... You can infact install KMS vista Business and activate other business machine but cannot go higher in hierachy ..meaning cannot activater server ed. but server editions can activate workstations..

Other is MAK- it has count of number of times you can activate OS... all at once or one that many times before key becomes useless... I have both MAK and KMS keys ... since i donot activate other machines on my network i used MAK key... the original count was 650 decremented by one when i used it... now i can use the same key to activate 649 more machines but problem is if i format the machine, the key is already exausted... the count can be found out via Volume key management tool downloaed via Microsoft...

It was my understanding same volume activation applies to windows 7 ... as i did not get any mail regarding change in volume activation...

So suppose you get a MAK key for 10 means 10 people can activate win7 and if they format it they are on their own...

If its KMS key they cannot restrict how many machines you activate and how many times since data is not with microsoft its not binding you can hack and reset count and keep on activating machines

Now unless they have changed volume activation .... incase you get MAK then anyone can activate 10 machines cannot wait for 10 customers and once its installed cannot reactivate if key gets exausted ...

If KMS someone needs to set up a Server and activate rest of the machine... better if you are getting KMS then you can possibly activate 7 for all of us here in TE.... Then no doubt you be most popular guy here...
