Windows 8 Boots in 8 Seconds

8 seconds is really great in Windows standard,,nice concept using semi hibernate mod to increase the booting up performance..don't bring linux or any other os here - it does not matter how good or bad it is in comparison to windows

Okay I understand if you would say that this is in comparison with Windows 7 and hence we should keep Linux out of it. But when you say it does not matter how good Linux or OSX is in comparison to Windows, then we have a problem.

Ummm do people even shutdown laptops? :S I havent since some 2-2.5 years now. always keep on standby and tehres the unoccasional restart. Waking up from standby takes just a second.

I use to shut down my old c2d hp because for some reason it always had performance issues when I kept it on standby for a prolonged time.

I never shut down my current MacBook pro however, that's a plus of the Mac.

Guys using ssd's on windows 7.what is the boot time do you get?

It irritates me to see such BS being claimed about boot times. If you get the hardware right, any OS with a 'Fresh install' will boot up instantaneously!!

I wonder if these posers could actually claim real life Boot times when you have all the gargabe you would never use installed on your PC and it refuses to boot up in 8 secs! Besides, even if it boots in 15 secs, or 8 secs, what are you going to do with the 7 sec difference? A fart would take longer than 7 secs or are you going to clean up your room in 7secs? So, it doesn't matter if you're loosing 7 secs of your precious 24hrs

PS: Please take the post above with the pun that is intended in it. :P Also, this is aimed at the source, not at the OP

very true and as far as i go i wouldnt belive such claims unless i see such at my end or else if i may say proven, but yes ssd's do boot faster then hdd's nothing new there

You wouldn't just see better boot times if you have an SSD... you would also feel the difference in boot times if you have normal mechanical harddrive... For eg... Windows 7 boots faster than Windows XP and Vista...

windows, linux,OSX all of them are targeted for different type of computer users depending on need, tech savy and budget. Each of them are great on what they do, so comparing three of them are pointless to me.

I'm sorry but I don't think you know what you are talking about. The average user needs a browser, an office suite, a music player, a video player, a torrent client, a chat client. All the three OS's provide these softwares. The only difference apparent to me is the speed, reliability, customizability and added security features that Linux provides.

I installed Debian with openbox on my Dad's laptop and installed everything he needs. He is now happier than ever with his laptop. He doesn't need to worry about viruses, or his laptop getting slower over time, or his disks getting fragmented or whatever.

Oh wait I forgot something, Linux is FREE!

25 seconds on my laptop from POST to Metro screen

1.8 C2D, 160GB HDD (5200RPM), 4GD DDR2
HATE the Metro UI though

I would have shifted over to 100% Linux, except for

a) Alternative's are not as refined as Office 2007, and formats are still not fully compatible

b) STEAM

Installed the Windows 8 downloaded from MSDN and this is a gimmick . The OS is loaded on to a WD VELOCIRAPTOR and the boot time was 24 seconds .

I hope its not sleep mode or hibernate mode , why wasn`t this shown on a desktop . Why a laptop .

Is that including the POST time?

If not, I would have expected it to be much faster on a velociraptor

check the bold highlighted sentence-thats the answer,,average joe show does not care and don't know much about other alternative than windows, so until n unless techies like you take effort and time to educate them for the same, they will still rely on Windows- they use (pirated or legit) windows ,,who will market about linux, who will make sure device drivers and all,,,its a lost war dude,, Linux is a better OS than Windows,,but Windows is much better supported & marketed ,,may be Android will be a have chance against windows in coming future,,but hey M$ may go FREE business model too - if situation demands- it will be interesting than

I dont think that Microsoft will ever go FREE given the human resources and investment they have in the Operating system alone. What would they sell if Windows is free?? . also given their huge failure in internet industry right form the start(Netscape). This is the only software that is keeping the company alive. I seriously think that Microsoft should fire whomever is responsible for Hotmail, windows messenger and related stuff

The only reason I choose Debian is because I'm most comfortable with apt and I'm a minimalist. The average user could go for Ubuntu, or Mint. Though I understand the point you are trying to make. It's the marketing that makes all the difference. Windows certainly does have it's advantages in terms of user and developer support. It is also not as varied as Linux is. But if you take your time with Linux, you'll be pleasantly surprised and quite impressed.

It's not a lost cause at all. The responsibility is up to educated users like us to give Linux a proper try, and then maybe introduce people, fed up with slow computers and viruses, to the world of Linux.

Coming back to the topic. I believe including Linux in the comparison is only fair, people should be given the entire picture and then allowed to make a judgment.

@rakesh

It would have been better if you would have mentioned which PC they used to test boot time and with what hardware... :)

Seems like they used mechanical harddrive... :)
