The new Windows LiveTMessenger Beta is the next-generation MSN Messenger and, as always, it is free to download. It has everything you already love about Messenger – your contact list, emoticons, and plenty of ways to access to your friends via text, voice and video – plus new ways to connect and share documents with magical ease. When you move to the new Windows Live Messenger, it will be like upgrading from one MSN Messenger version to the next. All your contacts will move with you, as will all your personalised elements (emoticons, winks, user tiles, themes, etc…).

Your online world gets better when everything works simply and effortlessly together. That's the basic idea behind Windows Live. So the things you care about - your friends, the latest information, your e-mails, powerful search, your PC files, everything – comes together in one place. This is a brand new Internet experience designed to put you in control. And this is just the beginning – you'll see many more new services in the coming months.

^ Enig, can you clarify further on what you mean by not exactly public :S

I have not installed it, so would be better if you give more details why you need a invite now - if its open to public ?

its not public since when i go to sign up page, all i see is this
To sign up for the beta, please give us your e-mail address so we can send you an invitation when it becomes available. We'll also use it to keep you in the loop about the latest developments. We'll use your e-mail address for this beta release and relevant updates only, and the first notice you receive about this will include the option to discontinue further messages regarding the Windows Liveâ„¢ Messenger Beta if you choose.
so only if you have an invite you can download the beta version. so thats why i said you need an invite

Despite reports, Windows Live Messenger Beta NOT public

I don't get why sites like Bink's, MSFN or ieXbeta are all reporting the "public launch" of the Windows Live Messenger Beta. And judging by your e-mails, these announcements have baffled a lot of Messers who failed to obtain the beta despite the statements.

The confusion probably started after a red colored "Windows Live Messenger" text link appeared on MSN UK's homepage by the end of last week (as first spotted by TheFighter). It links to a product page still showing screenshots of older Beta-versions and claiming that "the new Windows Live Messenger Beta is [...] as always [...] free to download". Indeed, it is free to download but you still have to sign up for the trial first (don't worry if your country's not listed) and wait a couple of days before you get invited.

Admittedly, if a beta version is being used already by about one million users the definition of "public" is contestable. But let's just conclude that there's still NO instantly available direct download link for just anybody.

Nope... still not public. Verified. If you havent been invited you STILL get the error message. There are patches available online however, that allow you to get connected with the MSN8 beta even if you havent been invited.

From Neowin

A new version of MSN Messenger is one of the projects currently being worked on by the Windows Live team. The beta version, ostensibly called MSN Messenger 8 but referred to in many places as "Windows Live Messenger," has so far been available for use only by invitation. Beta test users could send e-mail invites to their friends, but there was no way for the general public to test the service.

This changed last Friday, when the MSN Messenger fan site www.mess.be posted an "exclusive" story about Microsoft silently opening up the application to all users, turning the program into a public beta. Other sites on the Internet picked up on the story, but it turned out to be simply a glitch on the MSN servers, and not an actual change in company policy. The guilty server was fixed, and the general public was again locked out from the beta, but a posted direct link to the invitation acceptance page may have let the cat out of the bag again.
