I have a lenovo 3000 N 100 running Windows vista Home basic 32 bit. Since last 2 days the windows explorer crashes as soon as i right click any file or folder. double clicking the file runs it without any error. Also if I try any shortcut for Copy, Cut or Paste or delete the explorer crashes again.

I have restored the system twice but no good. Scanned the system for any virus with Norton and ZoneAlarm twice and system is clean. Also after searching this thread Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors - HelpWithWindows.com
I tried disabling the unknown shell extensions but am unable to disable them.

I am not too good with registery enteries so not poking in it. can anyone shed some light on how to resolve this issue without requiring a Format

Start an administrator console (right click on cmd and select "run as admin")

sfc /scannow

If there are errors in Vista files, this will normally find them. It may be you have some other issues going on though.

I had a similar issue (except it only used to crash whenever I stepped inside any of the drives in My Computer). Fixed it by either turning User Account Control On or Off (Control Panel - User Account - UAC). See if it works.

Param seems turning off the UAC works a bit. Though I can right click and open things and also Delete and cut copy short cuts are working but the windows explorer crashes after around 30 sec. of the execution.

King bhai the scan fixed some of the files, the crash time delay has now increased to 3 min :P any other help/advise would be most welcome.

I just installed Vista64 on a brand new machine (new build) and have had a few set backs. I had been unable to right click without the lag but now any time I right click on the desktop at all windows explorer crashes and restarts.

I've tried ShellExView and disabled anything recent, no changes. Is that an alternative to doing a restore point (which will affect the programs I just installed that are not causing the problem, right?) or reinstalling the OS completely which wipes out everything in any event? HELP! This no right click sucks.

Originally right clicking and copying was slow as all hell and I ran a chkdsk and it found a few small bad sectors and fixed that. Now this. UGH! :@

It's securom. Using Shellexview, find the Securom entry it's starts with cmd something. Disable it and your good to go ... i.e. if you're using alternate sources of games :P If you're using legit copies update to the latest patch. I had this problem with C&C3 Kane's Wrath & Mass Effect PC. Fixed - permanently!
