Just trying to pass some info around

I happened to find an ahem version of vista..which runs much smoother and faster then the Ful Blown version i was using.
Its just 700MB in size so fits in a CD

takes about 450MB of ram with the comp idling and no apps running.

Some Information:

System Requirement :- ( minimum )

800 Mhz Processor,
256 MB RAM ( 512 Recommended Though, will run nice on 512 MB ,better than full Vista )
4 GB free HDD space ( for vista installation only ),
compatible graphics card if u want AERO theme working ( how ever a patch is appied to force AERO to run on unsupported Graphics Card, havent tested it though.),

Installation:
Installation is Fully Automated.
Genuine/validation *rack:
You Wont need to find *rack to activate and validate
Tweaks:-
i have included following registry tweaks within it.

1. Force AERO Glass Effect to run under non-supported Graphics Card ( not tested )
2. Windows will tell you exactly what it is doing when it is shutting down or is booting ( you can see it on logon screen )
3. Added command prompt to right click context menu
4. Disabled User Account Control ( UAC) [ you can enable this from control panel later. ]
5. Add "Explore from here" context menu while right clicking on folders
6. Gt rid of the Windows Mail splash screen
7. Show Super Hidden Files in vista
8. Maximum simultaneous downloads for IE to 20 ( default is 2 )
9. Enable ClearType Tuning
10. Added 'Copy to Folder' and 'Move to Folder' to right click context menu
11. Added 'open with notepad' to right context
12. Disabled Windows Media Player AutoUpdates
12. Added "Advanced System Properties" to right-click on Computer
13. Faster browsing with IE

Haven't tested it yet...but looks positive....loads faster....responsive...my win xp takes about 297MB while idling and avg installed...this with nothing installed takes about 450MB....my prev vista used to take about 700-800MB while idling and no app running.

So is this the definitive Win XP replacement ?

RAM is not the constraint here..

imo it actually is the only constraint

cause the processors and gpu (even my onboard ati x1200 can handle aero) are fast enuf but even 1GB ram is less(considering vista quotes 512MB as minimum and recommends 1GB)...ppl are complaining with 2GB ram+gaming on vista ...so many are now upgrading to 4GB.

vlite.net is the place to go...

Vlite is a tool to customize the vista installation..you can do every thing listed in that description and even more..
so play around with it..

You can create an unattended install, integrate your drivers and delete the rest, you can turn off unwanted services, remove applications and all the things that you dont like and then install vista..
Best of all its a freeware and the developer is very accessible..

vlite is like the nlite of vista.. id recommend using vlite too... make ur own customized version of vista.. it will run more to ur needs

Yeh but there is a very good chance that stuff u remove with nlite will give problems later when u use some features removed from setup . I downloaded this ahem version of vista and will give it a try in VM .

My suggestion - if you want to remove stuff from disk, use ocsetup. That is the only official supported mechanism...

Also, if you VLite vista, SP1 won't install. It will only install on a full install . You can wait for SP1 to come out and slipstream it and then vlite it.

It has been out for some time if you use a 64 bit system :)

P.S. There is no way to slipstream SP1 into a Vista CD. There are some weird workarounds, but they aren't easy to manage, and involve hacks.

Slipstreaming will only be enabled with SP2. Around that time (or when they release Win 7 whichever comes first) they'll probably provide application developers with a full model of the new component system (think like Linux package management, but a much more general mechanism, with WinSXS considerations).

^^^ Yes there is a reverse integration that can be done. Anyway once SP1 is widespread we will know which modules are needed for SP1 to install correctly and which can be remooved.

I was going to download this , but then i found out another ahem OS called XP performance edition which was 217 mb in size

works like a charm even on a 64 mb RAM machine

Can you tell us what all can be done to make vista run fast (normal version)

like turning off various services etc(many of my friends r not using vista*ahem*version for surfing on net) so include useless internet services too.....

^lame..

try tweaking softwares...turn off aero and other heavy stuff..its will be faster..you can try vista tweaking softwares..

I am quite sure that if u reduce it to barebones and do same with xp , xp will run much more stable and fast compared to vista .

I don't quite get the point here. Why strip Vista of all or most of it's much touted features? Why not just use a full featured XP instead?

Cause there are some inherent features of vista that are of much more value than xp,
For example its way easier to repair boot errors in vista,
there are many other features like previous version etc, looks are the only heavy baggage vista carries..
get both xp vista to basic theme, and consider the advancements in vista and now with sp1,its way more user friendly, secure and wat not..
