Okay, so here's the thing.

My dad's laptop came with Windows XP Home Edition. Due to various reasons we lost the initial installation. Also, recovery CDs got damaged.

What I now have is an ISO of the retail Windows XP Home Edition SP3, and my Dad's OEM License.

Is it possible to install the from the retail ISO? Say I burn that into a CD and enter the OEM License during setup?
Will that be a legal install?

I know, we wont have that '3 computers' thing that the retail release provides, but it should legally work on my Dad's Lappy, isnt it?

^ Are you sure. I think it can be done, just aint sure.

I cannot try right now. I am actually downloading the ISO over torrent. Would cancel if it wasnt possible.

I should be able to put the OEM key, its the 'license' that matters, not the release/build/media AFAIK.

Well i think d os will get installed as d key acceptance by the os is done by an algorithm that is embedded in d os programming but after it gets installed try to run d wga test n see if its showing ur os geniune or not.

Actually this is my condition:

My Dad's Laptop came with Windows XP Home OEM.
Its HDD crashed, and the recovery CDs are nowhere to be found.

What should I do to get it right?

head over to your preferred tracker, seach for XP OEM backup or something like that... download, write and install :)

^ Wont that be illegal? I mean if thats the case, I can always get an XP CD from some of my friends, but its not what I want for now if its illegal.

Sry for butting in but I have a similar query.

I have HP pavillion PC tht came bundeled with Xp home edition(recovery disk). After I upgraded to a new motherboard Xp installs completely and during the final stage of logging in a msg pops up saying " this is not a pavillion PC".

Is there any way to get rid of this msg and use my XP? Plz help:huh:

^ Thats bad. I'm afraid your License does not hold anymore, since you have replaced your Motherboard.

You can get along by calling MS and making up stories, and activate by phone, but thats not Legal either.

That's an issue with Branded PC. If you want to upgrade under warranty period do it via vendor else your warranty is void and you can't use your OEM OS.

Solution call your vendor and brief him the scenario see if they can suggest any thing. Microsoft Helpline would not be able to help you in case of OEM OS.

OEM keys do not work in Retail Setups. BUT you could look at some forums where they edit a specific .ini/ .inf file in the XP CD to convert it to OEM so that the key works. Also you could check on torrent sites for recovery cd/ dvd iso of your specific brand/ model. if under warranty, ask the vendor for a copy of the recovery cd's. Could be chargeable tho.
