last night my windows xp sp2 integrated+sp3 got nuked. Now I am in dilemma - should I go back to windows xp sp3 integrated or windows 7. As I have 4gb of ram I want to try the 64bit version of windows 7.I will do gaming also - hope 64bit version will work well mostly in both old games (eg. max payne, dues ex,halflife 1 etc) and new games (oblivion, crysis,GTA 4). I need to finalize this thing by end of today..guys please suggest

/thanks in advance/

64BIT Win7 should work fine for you. It has a WoW emulator which will run your 32BIT applications. Most drivers are embedded. Also most hardware is compatible. I think there was some issue with Creative Sound devices. Games...? Just do a quick google for 64BIT compatibility. Also you might need to install some old Dx9 updates, which is not an issue.

You should be fine with Win7 64 BIT.

thank god , I don't have a creative sound card.my only worry is game compatibility, rest of my usage are very generic-word processing, spreadsheet, powerpoint, browser for surfing,Antivirus. I have kaspersky 2009,,i saw their website, that they give free upgrade to windows 7 version - will it work on 64bit?

1. does ms office will work with win 7 64 bit ?

2. any free dvd/cd burner ?

3.any free antivirus of 64 bit ?

1. Yes. (Even Office 2003)

2. GBurner.

3. AVG.

These are my preferences. So it can be done. There are other options available for (2) and (3).

Windows 7 is the best. Its even got an XP mode which you can download from the Microsoft site. Havent used it so far as I never needed it. Personally using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Using Win7 64 bit Ultimate close to 1 month,

Don't game though, but Office 2003(installed Excel only)& 2007 just work fine.

If anything not 64-bit Win7 put it to Program Files (x86) folder as the fellow member already mention WoW emulator.

I installed P.Shop CS2,CS3 & CS4 where later one is own 64-bit support.

Using Avira antivirus with Comodo Firewall & Avira is installed (x86) folder.

Currently Win 7 is best, if you have pro or ulti u can d/load WinXP mode (free) for running old critical productivity suite in VM.

Just installed win7 64bit utlimate edition -its so fast. But I need to repartition my or do some sizing my C drive - as my 20gb drive fulled - 1gb free only(4.5gb preserved for paging). Is there anyway where i can size other drive add it to my c drive ??

^^

How much hardware RAM you have. I doubt you can add another drive volume to the all ready designated "C" volume.

You can try tools like Partition Magic

I got Easeus Partition Master Home Edition 5.5.1 I hope this will work.

this is the retail price right ? thanks

I used to redirect my entire" My Documents" folder to D or any other drive in Windows Xp.I want to do the same for Windows 7 also and found "how to do it". Now does it affect the performance of the OS anyway ?

I think Professional should be sufficient if we are looking for Windows XP mode (if not that I would prefer Home Premium as its much cheaper :()?
BTW does this come with both the 64bit and 32 bit media OR do we need to order the 64bit separately (as with Vista)?

Using Easeus Partition Master you can add more space to C drive from the adjacent partition. This can be achieved without reinstalling OS but make sure the adjacent partition (D drive) from where you borrow the space is empty and your data is backed up.

Yes, Win7 ultimate come with both 2 DVDs which is 32bit & 64 bit,

& yes, I want the professional version too, but ultimate cost 312/- more, So in that point I choose ultimate.

I tried to install Easeus partition master but it is not compitible with 64 bit os - any workaround. I already shrink the D drive and released 16gb which is unallocated now. I saw that I can;t extend my C drive - the option is not coming - is it locked or I need to login as Admin. I have also done googling and found that --

Merging partitions is not recommended to increase c drive since merging partitions is a danger to your data and system. If you insist on merging partitions, do backup your system and other partitions before merging. However there are more smart way to do the trick.

In fact you can shrink your partition which has a lot of free space to make unallocated space, and move the unallocated space to the c drive by moving the partitions in between. And then extend the c drive.

So I was wondering does anyone here feel the necessity for Windows XP mode in Win 7 i.e. are there any apps that absolutely require it or can we live without it?

It depends on you, If your organization/you run any old productivity suite such as older Accounting software or any customize product which naively require WinXp environment, else you are fine with Normal Win7.

In that case a user perfectly go for Home Premium and save the cash or invest in something else.

There is compatibility mode also present there which can be accessed by right-clicking any .exe file if there a installation problem (Due to Win7 in-compatibility).

You don't need WinXP mode unless your software is very old such as I mentioned.

Forget about WinXP mode, u can always keep your WinXP(if it is *aham* too) with Win7 by using dual boot :) .
