I am currently upgrading my system. I accidentally broke a number of pins on my present CPU - it wont boot anymore - which made me cancel my wait for Bulldozer. Anyway, this is how it will be after the final upgrade.

New components:
CPU: i5 2500K - mildy overclocked. Say 3.8 to 4Ghz.
Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Pro
GPU: 6950 2GB - unlocked to 6970 if possible. Not hell-bent on it.
RAM: 1600 2x2GB DDR3. Havent finalised yet.

Old components:
HDD: 1 x Seagate 7200.12 500GB
PSU: Corsair 650TX
1 x LG dvd drive
4 x Scythe Flex 75 CFM fans

Question is, would my 650TX be able to accomodate the overclocked i5 2500K and unlocked 6970? I know its better to be safe and get a higher wattage. Thing is, I dont have the moolah for a PSU upgrade. But, if I know that 80% the 650TX wont be enough, I will cut other costs and upgrade it. So, need your suggestions guys.

Re: Would my PSU be on the edge after I upgrade

the power consumption of ur new rig wont be more than 400w with 650tx will handle with ease rest assured go ahead with ur upgrade...even with overclocking it wont go beyond 450w u will still be left some headroom with ur psu....:)

The TX 650W will do fine but do look at other options for later such as Cooler Master Silent Power Pro M700, I will not recommend adding anything to the current configuration if you want the TX 650W to soldier on, if you want breathing space for later look at the Cooler Master Silent Pro series Power Supply -> Silent Pro - Cooler Master / FSP Epsilon series FSP / Corsair V2 Bronze + series OR Modular-PSU series Modular PSUs - Power Supplies / Sea Sonic Bronze series :::: Sea Sonic ::::.

Hope this helps instead of confusing you.

Re: Would my PSU be on the edge after I upgrade

No need to buy a new PSU as your current psu would handle the new rig that you are gonna build pretty easily... And you can easily overclock i5 2500k to 4.3GHz without even touching the voltage setting...

Where did you get those wondrous figures bruv, on load itself the Core i5 2500K takes upto ~ 133W http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288 while the card adds another ~ 292W http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/293, while on idle the numbers you've given are somewhat accurate on Load they are way of mark.

instead of making vague statements go back and check for yourself what those numbers mean and if u still dont get it then try reading the small description beside those numbers...

even 400w what i wrote is still higher and please dont consider furmark score for gpu power draw cos no game out there is gonna stress the gpu like that........its just for benching

a small tip for u buddy get a little information about "Thermal design power"

i hope u get it now :)

Total power requirement of your system comes to 376w. Unless you go for sli/xfire etc. or u're having insane no of hdds/peripherals tucked into your cabinet, a 450w can easily serve the purpose. And you're having a Corsair 650TX that means lots of headroom. You can safely experiment overclocking, unlocking etc. with that.

Here's the screenshot for power requirement calculation:

The TX 650 is more than enough for your system. See what all I am running off it.

Dandy..!

TDP is a rough estimate, it is not a holding value and a SMPS wastes a certain amount of energy during conversion, and as the load increases the efficiency decreases, heat plays another aspect.

According to that even my total power consumption comes upto 376W, I doubt it is accurate. Configuration is in my signature.

Re: Would my PSU be on the edge after I upgrade

Thank you everyone for your replies!!
So, I guess I will retain the 650TX for now. Seems the sensible thing to do now. Will upgrade if I have any issues in future :)

Yes, it does help thank you.

I used this - eXtreme Power Supply Calculator and it said 559W. Well, I roped in some extra components too just to be safe. But, I thought it would be better to ask the user opinion too.

This makes me feel a lot better. Thanks!

a good PSU like the corsair hx650 or tx is always worth the heavy investment. Psu are something that you dont frequently change. For your needs tx650 should suffice all the gaming power you will need.

DAMN ! You sound worried :P

More than enough. If you wont be running the whole rig on 100%, 24/7 - I think the 650TX will be more than willing to do the job for you without any smelly problems.

intel processor draw power well within the tdp specified, which is not the case with most of the amd processors and also tdp is given for a particular series of processors since the mentioned processor is not the top one in the sandy bridge series it will definitely perform within 95w.

you have got it wrong with efficiency.....it does not effect much the output of the smps it greatly effects the input....let me put it like this for a psu with 80% efficiency to deliver 300w of output it will draw ~360w.........heat wont be any issue with the above mentioned rig cos any qaulity smps wont heat much at delivering 60% of its rated power.........about wastage there already a lot of headroom for the smps not to worry about wastage.

and regarding ur case yes its absolutely correct....in your rig the most power hungry component is cpu not gpu

if u still have doubt then go back and again read the anandtech links carefully that you posted in the above posts
