Yo, Guys :O found this on Xtreme-Systems:
So, customer today brought in a BBA RADEON X1900XT 512MB... Just purchased it 5 days ago. Apparently was playing FEAR for a few hours, the GPU temp was up over 90c for an extended period of time, customer closed the game, and went to take a shower... Came back and the card was toast... Computer was beeping away...

Bummer for the customer, but this raises the question, is 90c too hot for any card? Or did this card just fail prematurely? I know my X1800XT 512MB got to over 90c under heavy gaming, and it did not die... I thought it was very hot though, so I watercooled mine and now sit about half that.

But for your average user, who will probably not water cool, and just stick to the stock cooler... Is there a risk of any card dying? Or as I asked a second ago, was this just an odd case?

No, this is not to scare anyone or start GPU Flaming thing. It's just to make people aware at TE, since there are many who are getting the same card. The strange thing is that he was able to play FEAR for few hours at some mind-numbing 90C.... man I dont know what I'll do if my card dies like that:beer:

maybe u will RMA the card:P .....

this time ATi's launch was on time so cards were not properly run in maybe for first 20 day u have to drive it slowly

Poor joke i know but wat to do its 3 in the morning and i am bored

Well, the batch of cards Darky is getting is covered under Warranty. So, if they do die, the people can RMA them. Yes, it will be a hassle as I doubt an instant replacement will be available but still..... At least you aree not left with 30K of dead hgardware on your hands.

A improperly seated heatsink, raising of core/memory voltages by someone who doesnt know the stuff could be the reason. Anyways the OP on extremesystems hasn't given any reason leaving too much to imagination.

Edit: Imo both Nv and ATi need better cooling for their Hi-end hardware and Mid end stuff. :|

Aah ,the joys of warranty.
Well Nikhil you obviously wont be getting instant replacement.
Its not a LAN card from a local brand...duh

thats right they seriously need to improve the cooling ...

Wow..

Thats pretty high. 90C on the x1900xt.. Man..

I thought the safe limit for any gfx card was 75?

nVidia 7800GTX 512 does 75 at load :S

^^ mine GTX is around 73-78 in load condition with stock fan and HS .... it was 78-82 before but thanks to riva tuner now i can increase the fan speed ..... previously on full load fan speeds max goes to 3000rpm now its around 3600rpm and it quite no noise at all ..... even at max speed 3900-4000rpm all i can hear is little whine ...... in 2D mode the fan is running @ 2200 rpm

Looking at the current trend in high end gfx, it will be no time before liquid cooling becomes a norm.
Its worse for pple here in India

Well, soon the next gen cards will start shipping with compact liquid cooling :P

Anyway, there are always some bad cards and some are bound to fail in the user's hands. Happens with all the cards, X1900XT is not exception. Still no signs of multiple similar failures.
