X-bit labs - Nvidia Plans Further Price-Cuts for Latest Graphics Cards.
Nvidia Corp., the world’s No. 1 supplier of discrete graphics processing units, plans to further reduce pricing of its high-end graphics cards to sustain its market share, market rumours claim. But there are some problems: customers who have already paid for their expensive graphics boards would hardly be happy with price-cut, moreover, manufacturing costs may be too high and Nvidia may not afford a price reduction.

Citing sources among Nvidia add-in-card partners, HotHardware web-site reported that Nvidia plans to lower the price of its flagship GeForce GTX 280 graphics card to $499 from $649 shortly from now. Presently the company’s partners sell less expensive GeForce GTX 260 for $399, however, it is unclear whether the developer plans to reduce the pricing of this model too.

“[The GeForce GTX 280 price] may be a little higher, or potentially even a little lower (than $499), but that [is] something definitely in the works,†an anonymous supplier of graphics cards said in a brief interview with HotHardware web-site.

The GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 graphics cards are based on Nvidia G200 graphics processing unit, which is very large in size and is believed to be very expensive to manufacture. Actual graphics cards utilize very advanced power supply chain as well as 512-bit memory bus, thus, they are pretty expensive to make as well. While the exact price of the chip is unknown, it is believed to be over $100, which is a very high price for a chip. Since the manufacturing costs are very high for Nvidia, it is unclear whether the company will make substantial profit selling its high-end products.

Nvidia needs to decrease pricing of its high-end graphics cards as its arch-rival ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, is finally back with high-performance ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 graphics cards that are priced at $199 and $299, respectively. According to performance benchmarks, two ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics boards quite frequently outperform the GeForce GTX 280 while costing less, which is why many enthusiasts may prefer two higher-end ATI Radeon HD 4870 models over the offering from Nvidia, even despite of the fact that multi-GPU operation heavily relies on drivers.

Earlier this week Nvidia issued a warning regarding its earnings during the second quarter of fiscal 2009.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

Cards are listed on newegg earlier than expected before this news on x-bit labs..We already post our views on the ''GTX2XX price cut'' thread started by morgoth..
:D:

^^ ATI need not reduce prices as nvidia is fighting for the market now. It is no longer in a position to command the market. I'd say this is a panic move to gain some market after the HD 48xx release

all i can think is if ATI plans for price drops then we have more people willing to buy 48XX series. I will be in top 20 of the list :P

+1 to checksum's comment

MSI GTX260 is already selling at 260$ afterMIR, making it a better buy than 4870!!

first of all, even americans dont believe in MIR's, pretty hard to get the rebates, second 4870 is challenging GTX280 scores, and you say GTX260 @ 260 with MIR is a better buy, :@

Well 4870 at best performs a few fps better than 260 in most conditions or all games from some review, in some reviews its better in some games and losses in some, its mostly give or take. Now if we scale 4850 as 1x, 4870 = 1.8x then 260 cant be less than 1.6x, so for $50 cheaper, since 4870 is still $310 at most places, 260 becomes a sweeter deal.

GTX260 @ $222 is what I call serious competition.

Actually that $222 is from Nvidia, it will become $329 to the end user after going through the AIB's. so final prices should be

260 - $329
280 - $499
I think $280 would be a good price point for 260 and around $450 would be a good for 280, assuming 4870x2 will be launched at $500.

Yeah, I know. What I meant is that an end user price of $222 (or at least $250) would be what I would term serious competition. The current final market pricing of $330 on GTX260 and $500 on GTX280 is not enough to not enough to force AMD to reduce its own prices.

With the present prices, the 4850 CF can match GTX280 for $100 less, single 4870 can match the GTX260 for $30 less, 4870 CF leaves the GTX260 SLI in the dust and still cost $60 less. Once the 4870X2 cards are launched, the would probably do the same with GTX280 SLI or even TRI SLI. There is still no competition for a single 4850 at its price point.

Still people who want the best single GPU solution for less than $500 would probably go for the GTX280.

Oohkie got u, well that would mean some serious competition, but I dont think we will see such price cuts with the 260 soon, AFAIK, it does costs a lot for manufacturing 200 series. Looking at the prices these cards were launched at I dont really know if they can even do such cuts without loosing money.

I agree on 4850CF to some extent, but I doubt about 2x 4870x2 compared with 280 SLI, I dont think that CFX will scale as well as dual gpu's, sheer horsepower wise it will be more powerful but looking back quad solutions dont work very well. In any case it would be not faster than tri sli. In my reckoning, this is how the hierarchy might look performance wise once 4870x2 is launched

280 SLI > 4870x2 CFX > 4870x2 > 4870 CF > 260 SLI > 4850CF / 280 > 4870 > 260 > 4850/9800GTX+ > 9800GTX

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

EDIT: Btw I'm yet to see a credible 260 SLI review, so its place in this table is pure speculation, it might fare better in SLI than 4870 in CF.

FYI- MSI GT260 is available at Newegg since yday for $299 already!

good news... now GTX280 shud coming down to $360-$380 otherwise its not gonna sale as compared to 4870 which is 10-15% slower than GTX280

Yea the GTX 280 is also down to $499 since the launch price of $659. All thanks to AMD....gotta love the comapny, first they gave us the Athlon, and then they forced Intel in giving us the C2D.

Now the slug fest with nvidia...really fantastic for us!
