Next-gen Xbox wins the race to be seen first despite Sony's conference shuffling antics

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console is set to be unveiled to the world not at E3, as was previously believed, but in a half-hour long special to be aired on MTV the week previously, on May 12th.

The move is a massive break with tradition on Microsoft's part, and will get the Xbox 2 in front of consumers several days ahead of the unveiling of Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Revolution in Los Angeles the following week.

"It doesn't make sense to unveil the product behind a closed door, at a trade-only event," according to Microsoft corporate VP Peter Moore. "We wanted to talk directly to the consumer first."
The half-hour show will be a star studded affair, hosted by Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood and featuring a range of athletes, celebrities and even a live performance from rock band The Killers.

Last week it emerged that Sony's pre-E3 press conference has been scheduled to take place a few hours ahead of Microsoft's event, reversing the running order of previous years and supposedly giving the PS3 a head-start over Xbox 2 in the coverage war.

Xbox 2 - or whatever the console is eventually called, as it's believed that both Microsoft and Sony have ditched the sequential numbering system for their new machines - will be launched late this year, with an October / November date currently on the cards. Neither Sony nor Nintendo is expected to launch new hardware until 2006.

Microsoft is also running a viral marketing game to lead up to the May 12th unveiling of Xbox 2, with the "OurColony" game mimicking many features of the hugely successful Halo 2 "I Love Bees" viral game, and giving players tantalising sneak peeks at some aspects of the console and controller's design - although so far the main info to be gleaned is that the controller is probably white, which ties in with reports from sources close to Microsoft that it has gone with a white colour scheme for the system this time around.

Dude, Phantom basically sucked. The concept of downloading games and playing them is not universally possible. But, thats just what I feel and what I know. I heard a while back that they had signed up some sponserors after they that just dropped under the radar.

TechEnclave will keep you updated on this story as it develops,if we get our hands on a leak you will be the first to see it,stay tuned ;)

Looks like MS is playing its cards correct this time ;) A unveiling of this sort on a channel mostly viewed by the intended target audience (of the console) will surely generate some hype and hoppla abt the xbox 2.

Yep, but going by the current specs., the PS3 will beat the crap out of the Xbox 2! :hap2:
Anyway, the success of a console is determined by the quality of the games it has, not by its blazzing fast processor or G card! ;)

Very true ! and this time arnd i think i will root for MS since they already have a platform that is easier to program & optimise for........

Spot on!! That's the mistake Microsoft did with Xbox. Ps2 had a nice exciting library of games, while Xbox kept getting repetitive sports titles and the same type of action games again and again. Besides being the most powerful console today, it still is far far behind between the weakest console of this gen, the ps2. Weird isn't it ? that just explains, hardware isn't everything, the games library determines the right console to buy.

Thanks a lot!! Now that it may have a chance to come to India (since Asia is listed)
and i figure even if it doesn't, " Gamer TV " a UK based video games program that aires on " Ten Sports " will cover it up ;)

Man Gamer TV is the crappiest show ever but, beggers cant be choosers :D. XBox does have its days in the sun with some games but, the PS2's library completely outshines it (perhaps because there are so many PS2 exclusives). Anyways here's a bit of info I ran across could be just fake but still....
by David Clayman (IGN)

This morning, another bomb was dropped when Gamesindustry.biz announced that they have confirmed the name "Xbox 360" along with the look of the new system. The article cites British sources who gained access to Microsoft marketing documents. The console is rumored to be either white or silver, which jives with the previously released controller images from Ourcolony.net. The site also states that the console is concave in the center and can stand on its side much like the PS2. Of course, Microsoft refused to comment on rumors and speculation.

Hmm just give the PC 1 more generation and see it will beat the crap outta any gaming consoles. BTW about the guy who mentioned about Phantom basically Hardocp screwed their case royally it was nothing but a P3 with a 5700 and a Via mobo with 256 mb RAM, so much for innovations...

PS3 with their parallel processing is gonna be tough for programming, developers will need to start from Scratch.

All I am asking for is to release Burnout 3 for PC btw if it works on Xbox cant it work on the PC, are there any working XBOX emulators ?

LOlz aces hardware isnt a prob the controls are ! I dont see how one will be able to play the game and enjoy it with a keyboard ! If it does come for the PC they might as well ship it with a controller :D

Heh, some more (of the same) info on Xbox 360, this time from Eurogamer, then again it could be fake :D :
Eurogamer claims they have 'confirmed with sources' that Xbox 2 will indeed be named Xbox 360:

The machine can stand upright and hollows in at the middle, like it's "sucking in its cheeks," our source told us today. Previous rumours had put the console as silver, although fresh information says the final design may be white. It's impossible to tell from the documents, the source went on to say.
According to the source, the rumoured slot for the hard drive - which was apparently at the top of the machine - is not obvious on the document, and the person was unable to clarify where the slot for discs actually appeared.
The logo is described as a simple, round nexus with "Xbox 360" written inside it. Previous rumours had simply the numbers "360" in the disc.

@Aces - there aren't any working emulators for Xbox out there. Several were being tested but MS basically destroyed them.
You have to agree that there are certain specific games that can basically be enjoyed on consoles only.

I disagree you can always attach an Xbox or a PSU controller to the PC via USB converter + Most of the new cards have TV out so you can connect via TV. Its much more flexible...
