While PC gamers have been enjoying the Prey demo since its release, the big question for many people is how well the game will look and how smoothly it will run on the 360. The Marketplace demo was expected to hit earlier this week, but so far no joy in that department. Console gamers are stuck waiting and hoping for a good port, with the fear of another Quake 4-caliber port making them more than a little anxious.

IGN.com is reporting on the PC and 360 demos, and they have one nugget of information that may irritate 360 owners.

The teams are putting the final touches on the two versions, of which there will be a demo appearing on Xbox Live Marketplace and File Planet as early as midnight tonight (Wednesday, June 21, 2006). The PC version has been capped at a smooth 60 FPS, while the Xbox 360 version will run at a steady 30 FPS, and the single-player game is, with the exception of a few down-sampled textures here and there, gorgeous. Also, it's the exact same content on both systems. Built on the Doom 3 engine, both versions, from what we saw, are running smoothly, fast, and beautifully.

The best we can expect out of the 360 version is 30FPS? That's kind of a kick in the junk—I was hoping for a lot smoother framerates from the 360 versions. If it's capped at 30FPS, we better not see any framerate drops at all. This is more reason to go ahead and pick up the PC version if you have a system that can run it. If you're stuck on the 360, at least we know there won't be any lost content and the image quality is still high.

Expect a full report once the demo is released.

i guess frame rate drops are better than the screen tearing issues with some xbox 360 games namely g.r.a.w and project gotham racing.

Framerate is overrated - what is important is a certain minimum level, and very little jitter after that, i.e. the framerate should remain pretty much constant after that. If the minimum level is sufficient, then the game looks good.

fps are not meant to be played on consoles. microsoft is dumb enough to keep releasing fps games on consoles then they keep wondering y ps2 is still outselling them.
