I'll try to bargain tomorrow with the dealer. What should be the max. price that I should offer to him.

I really liked the tannoy speakers & buying PSBs without even auditioning them is probably gonna be my last option.

Can someopne explain the difference between the two speakers in detail?

What are their respective strengths and weaknesses?

Probably 18k? I've heard F1 customs going for as cheap as 16k. Perhaps if you could buy an amp from the same dealer you could bargain a bit more.

16 sounds right. The MX1, their predecessor, went for 14K last I checked, so I'd say 14-15 is the sweet spot. The PSBs are a touch more detailed and forward, where the Tannoy is a little smoother and laid back (and light on detail). At the exact same price the choice would be down to subjective preferences, both are very good speakers for the kind of money you pay. Paying 4-5K more for the Tannoy is a no-no.

However, don't buy anything without an audition, ever. That still doesn't stop you from using that threat as a negotiation tactic, though.

talked to the dealer today. He quoted 30k for the tannoys + onkyo TX-SR304 receiver.

how is this combo ?

Is this receiver good enough or are there any better options in this price range ?

Don't get the Onkyo, spend a little more and pair that with a nice stereo amp. The Cambridge Audio 340A is a much better buy, though far from the best amp. There are some options in the Marantz line, but I'm no expert in receivers.

The low-end Onkyos sound horrible.

I am looking for a 5.1 amp so stereo amps are out of the fray.

Marantz 3001 is not available with this dealer.I am gonna try to find it elsewhere.

He offered the Marantz 4002 for 21 k, but that would be really stretching my budget so I want to consider any other options first.

ok , time for an update.

I auditioned wharfedale speakers 9.1 & 10.1 side by side.

The source was cambridge audio 540 cd player connected to marantz 7002 amp.

wharf 9.1 -recessed mids , sibilant highs. IMO not worth 12k price .

Wharf10.1 -mids are better , highs are better controlled though some sibilance remains, better bass, much more detailed.Price 14k.

I had listened to Tannoys through my laptop connected to Telome amp., so its not a fair comparison. The 10.1 sounded more detailed but I would ascribe that to the superior DAC.

Still I liked the tonal balance of tannoys much more, vocals sounded extremely natural and highs were not sibilant ata all.Bass was slightly less in amount but fitted overall with the sound well.

I heard the F2 Custom yesterday, and it was very disappointing personally. It was connected to a reasonable amp (a NAD AVR) and we were playing reference material. It was very bass-shy, and the top end was without detail, but harsh at the same time.

The Image B25 will wipe the floor with the Tannoy, I would think.

^^Mordaunt Short has only crappy stuff below the Mezzo series though I haven't heard the carnival. I'd say buy the PSB/Monitor Audio Bronze/Usher S520.

I heard the Mezzo, and it's hard to believe there could be something worse :P

The Dali Lektor is also a candidate, though a bit thin all around.

After the auditions I have decided on these two :

Marantz 4002 + Tannoy F1 for 36k

or

Marantz 4002 + MS Carnival 6 for 34k

Any input regarding these will be welcome.

@Cranky : I heard the Mezzo 8 and they were actually quite good especially for the movies.

^^ 4002 for how much? And from where? Is it with bill n warranty or *ahem* way?

Tannoy aint a bad choice at all depending on your taste, I had liked them too. But once i heard the PSBs the choice was really automatic. Please mention the exact price you are getting these at.

I am also interested in the 4002 if the price is right.

@ Sarang : *ahem*

I can't audition the PSBs here in Delhi and I am not willing to buy anything that I haven't heard.

Till now I have auditioned the following :

1. Whardale 9.1/10.1

2. Tannoy F1 customs

3. MS 902i , carnival 6 & 8

4. Sirocco S30

I liked tannoys & MS carnival the most.

Once i get the amp, i shall make the final decision between these two.

I am OK with *ahem* too if priced right.

Was quoted 19K for a SR4002 in mumbai, how much are you getting it for?

^Congrats. If all the hear-say's to be believed, you've a good receiver there! :)

Please tell us the split-up damages. :P

^^ ha ha , I have been hearing it & the Tannoys & am really happy that i made these choices.

the vocals on the tannoys are just amazing, the best I have heard so far & I did audition the Mezzo 8.

Listening to some of Lata Mangeshkar's old songs & the vocals are perfect & the highs are well controlled & not sibilant like on other speakers.

They do lack bass a bit but I am gonna add a sub anyway.

ps : got the Marantz for 25k

Hi friends,

I have similar combo-
D2X + Onkyo AVR + Tannoy F1.

I can say sound is very good, bass is tight but not very deep.Vocals are gr8.If you want stereo amp, then CA 340/540 matches them well.Rotel may be the best, but price is the issue.
If you need AVR,then Denon can be balanced for both mov & music.
