Guys,
I just got a new 250GB SATA HDD from Seagate.
I partitioned it and formatted it.
I tried installing XP professional and during installation ,after the first restart,it says "Error Installing Operating System".

The HDD is detected in BIOS. The boot priorit is set to HDD-1st ; CD-ROM -2nd.
I spoke to Bottle and we're still not able to troubleshoot the problem.
Wat do u guys think it is?

a) You're using a XP-SP2 installation CD?

If not, use XP-SP2

b) what motherboard do you have - Does your motherboard need a SATA driver for the OS ?

If yes, then you need to create a driver floppy (they would be in the motherboard CD) and THEN install the OS, and select F6 to load the SATA drivers when the message pops up.

c) Finally, its advisable to re-partition and do a full format of the particular boot partition. You can format the other partitions after the OS is installed.

It be more useful to everyone (so they can help you easily) if you posted your system specs, OS version you're installing etc - it can help pinpoint errors! Good luck! :)

well from what i spoke from him , he is trying to install on a brand new seagate 250gb. he boots off cd , xp setup starts, detects hdd and installs but on the reboot he gets the message " error loading os" which made me feel that he didnt set the hdd priority in bios but he has and its a single hdd in the system

his board is an A8N-E

I run an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ on an ASUS A8N-E mobo.

The HDD is detected by the Mobo.

The OS version im installing is XP professional(no SP).

I first partitioned and formatted the drive using Partition Magic by booting through a different drive which already has XP installed.

nitrous i dont really care for partition magic.. try downloading seagate discwizard and use that to format and partition your hdd

The catch is that I just have a single copy and cannot compare with another.

Im currently trying to source another anyways.

well, in all probability it must be the case of a bad disc. Try to clean the disc with soap water, dry and clean with a soft cloth and try.

Guys, AK3D mentioned it earlier in the thread... must be sp2 to install on a SATA Drive or you need to have a floppy disk/cd with SATA drivers on it - hit F6 when given choice to load 3rd party drivers, and install SATA drivers. If the drivers didn't come with the disk go to the hdd manufacturers website and download there.

check the above posts, his hdd is being detected both in bios and in windows. that is not an issue here

After the 1st reboot, it still reads off the CD. So your boot order should 1st CD, 2nd HDD. Also, forget partition magic. Start the setup again, and format through it.

Inspite of the HDD being detected in the bios, a lot of Asus boards does not boot to xp because of a backdated bios. Thats my experience. Specially happens with SP2.
Also you can also check the RAM if there is any memory failure. But in that case you should receive a memory error or similar msg.
Best of luck. :)

I think, the booting through Cd is only required till the computer restarts for the 1st time. After that, the installation continues from the HDD while accessing the CD for some minor stuff.

Till the first reboot, all the files are copied to the HDD and after that, when the system reboots, all the configurations and setting up stuff takes place.

I think the newer Asus boards (and OSes) don't have that problem. My M2N-MX does not have it.

The new SATA HDD is probably SATA2. It is better to update the bios to function the new HDD correctly.

Updating the bios is no harm. It fixes other issues also. Atleast he is sure that it is not a Bios prob. Then it is advisable to check the RAM. :)
