Hi guys....i'm quiet a noob here..
I need some help. I have two problems.
1. While tuning on my pc, after the welcome sreen in XP pro, it shows the desktop wall paper but with no icons for quiet a long time (approx. 30 seconds).at that time i can move the mouse around but can't do any thing. Why is this? My pc is just 3 weeks old..
2. Is it normal to show the hard disk along with the pug and play devices?? I get this icon in the system tray just as one would get it when we insert a pen drive..Is there anything I can do about it??:(

Here is my system details....:hap2:
Intel C2Q 6600
segate sataII 320GB HDD
XFX Ultra 650i mobo..

Windows XP pro(updated till today):D
AVG 7.5 free
Avast home free
Zone alarm
VMware 6.0

Please help me.....
Thankyou...

a few tips...

Empty out the prefetch directory which is located under the Windows directory. See if this makes a difference.

Defrag the HDD.

Under Device Manager confirm that the HDD is running in DMA mode and not PIO mode. (I doubt this is the problem)

Under Device Manager check if any Yellow or Red marks for any devices

Check the Event Viewer for any problems.

MS freeware Bootvis has an option to make a list of programs loaded during BOOT with time taken for each - this should pinpoint any problematic program.

another tip: either keep avg or keep avast!

keeping both running at same time is asking for unwanted trouble!! :)

Regarding the delay, are you using an ADSL Connection? Windows Looks for IP when starting up. setting a Manual IP on LAN usually solves this problem.

It's for safely removing hardware. If it bugs you, just hide it.

Well d delay in icons is due to d process EXPLORER not starting, Use some tool to remove unwanted startup items,, Or use boot vis as suggested,,, That shud do d trick,,,

N ur usin too much of safety,,, take one single suite like Kaspersky or use avg's FULL suite,, usually these r the things dat take up d time before ur icons n all come..

WAt i suggest is a format n a new install,, use an xp update pack of ryan vm, slipstream it, add your drivers if any, n prepare a new cd.
N den install it,,,
U shud be running fine den!!!!

thanks guys for your quick replies......all of you helped me in solving my main problem...ie slow startup...thank you very much..

regarding the HDD shown in the system tray....i guess i'll ignore it...

As you guys said..I turned off all the unwanted services and also turned off AVG....and the result was a super fast booting...

Thanks every one.....
