Some of those softwares also track time on window, so it tracks time. My prior company all ready had this circa 2005.
so managers spend time in tracking and analyzing the time spent by engineers rather than tracking the project and work. why do companies happen to think that they are running kindergartens?

On top of that, its been discussed in meetings as well...

@Lord Nemesis , sire can you tell in which company you work :D :D

and can anyone hint, whether such tracking is also done in PSU banks, i had heard they do have high speed wifi available to the employees :D

Well, it comes in the gamut of managing people. Not justifying the practice, but that is what it is. Anyways, the Indian work culture is hardly professional and time savvy with respect to the firm. I know many stretch, but a lot of people goof off and waste time. But there should be better ways to manage all this.

stretching and goofing off are signs of mismanagement of work. I know for a fact that managers in service based companies spend too much time working on excel and analyzing stats. my boss at previous company used to say "I don't have time to track you people, it is expected that you manage your own time and deliver."
introducing a card swipe at the gates for people who go out to tea&smoke isn't going to improve productivity. it will only stop people going out.

They are answerable for resource utilisation. So yeah they have to. It's a primitive way of tracking I agree.

This is definitely a good news to the employees.
But i really ponder whether an attire will influence the quality of work.
The problem is not about being comfortable in clothes, but the problem starts when people overdo it and forget to differentiate between work and picnic
Working for a French MNC here in Mumbai for the past 4 months, i really doubt whether mini skirts and transparent tops are comfortable at work.
Even if its comfortable to people wearing such clothes, it is definitely not comfortable to people who work in a team.
Being honest, I myself have stalked (hope i am not misunderstood with ogling) in my initial 2 weeks of bench period at the cafeteria
Working in a campus of approx 4k employees, there will be a few handful of people who forget etiquette's spoiling the work atmosphere

The irony at my workplace. They tried to be strict about the dress code some time back, but half the girls from HR itself look like they have come to a party. Now it's more lenient. Official policy still still states the dress code but no more warnings from HR.

Can you people tell, how to fool it ?

I saw some optical mouse, placing which up on a pen/pencil/wire (small cylindrical object) - the cursor starts to dance. :) (moves randomly, indefinitely)
So, whatever the application is focus, the tracking software records as that being used and the PC doesn't get auto locked or hibenate.

Exactly ....
In a mechanical/production based company where some physical output can be counted like no of units per hour or like wise you might see some improvement but not in IT.
Person A can solve an issue in an hour which might take person B a week to solve based on their individual technical skills and aptitude.
Instead companies should focus on evaluating the employee regularly on his/her skills and quality of work instead of such stupid gimmicks.
I understand it helps the senior management to calculate costs and metrics but traditional time sheets also do the same thing. If that is not working for you nothing will work.
A service company in Kalyani Nagar Pune use to lock their gates and employees were not allowed to exit campus without a mail from their manager being sent to the security cabin. How ridiculous is that.
The guards use to blow the whistle at sharp 6:30pm and open the gates and public rushed out like ppl rush out of cinema hall after a movie.
You can imagine then.... what impression such tactics leave on employees. That company had >700 resignations at one single time.
It also tanked way to the bottom in the DQ employee satisfaction survey.... from the top 10 to not being in the top 70 :)

^That was my first company. They were so cool back then. We used to eat vada pav and special tea made by the old couple all the time. its a shame. its the same company where we used to play lan games and my 18hour non stop GTA san andreas session.
