As the title says, I noticed that many items sold by Amazon can be shipped directly to India all duties paid. Amazon's price is always lesser than 20north or iccworld and moreover some amount paid as import fees deposit might be refunded. Since black Friday is coming next week, there are a lot of deals which even after shipping and customs are sweet! Even without these amazing deals some of the prices turn out to be lesser because price drops take a long time to reflect in India. One example is the radeon 5770. Sapphire radeon 5770 costs rs. 8750 (including shipping) on theitwares whereas for the same amount you can be toxic edition on amazon. Note that you may lose warranty and all sorts of things might happen. Moreover I have been unable to pinpoint exactly which items amazon ships to India. Every graphics card by MSI I tried does not ship to India but many EVGA ones do! I have decided to buy something and see how it works. It might turn out to be a much better alternative than iccworld or 20north.

Just for general knowledge, Audio-Technica and JVC headphone do ship to India and the prices are lesser than iccworld or 20north.

How do u know if they ship to India?? And what are the Shipping Charges??

And how do u know what the Customs Charges are & who handles them??

I am confused..... :S

Hey Intresting but when I tested out. It was not actually very cheap, although mileage could vary depending on the product, avalability and customs. There is NO Warranty as you mentioned earlier.

"Import Fees Deposit" represents an estimate of the Import Fees that will be levied on the items in your order for shipment to countries outside of the US. By placing your order, you agree to allow Amazon Export and/or Merchant (as applicable) to collect the Import Fees Deposit for the applicable items in your order. This deposit will be used, on your behalf, to reimburse the Designated Carriers for the import fees that they have paid on your behalf to the appropriate authorities of the destination country.

You further agree that the Designated Carriers may disclose to Amazon Export or Merchant (as applicable) the amount of actual Import Fees levied on the item you have purchased from Amazon Export and/or Merchant ("Actual Import Fees"). In the event that the Import Fees Deposit exceeds the Actual Import Fees, Amazon Export or Merchant (as applicable) will refund the difference to you.

In the case of gifts or other purchases made on behalf of another recipient, you also agree to grant the foregoing authorizations on behalf of the recipient designated in your order.

To obtain details regarding the Actual Import Fees, or to obtain documentation or receipts in connection with customs clearance, you may contact the Carrier specified in your shipment confirmation e-mail.

The point is that if you ask quote from 20north or iccworld, the charges will be slightly more. As I mentioned in my original post, this is most useful when the product has add a price drop which is not reflected in India. There are also heck of a lot of loot which are not available here, for instance HP and TI calculators. There are going to be huge deals next week, and some items might even be sold at half the rate.

You need to register for an amazon account. Items which are shipped to India generally have this on their product info page :

In Stock.

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Gift-wrap available.

And items which do not ship to India have a message like this:

In Stock.

We are not able to ship this item to your default shipping address.

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Gift-wrap available.

Details of shipping and import fees are mentioned in the checkout step. Amazon says it will take care of all the customs, and will even pay form its own pocket if the amount is extra. One has to have first hand experience to see if it is worth it and how much customs is actually taken. I have diligently checked the customs page , and most of the interesting stuff have only 10% customs. I am not sure what additional charges are levied. If there are none then Amazon is just playing safe and charging a higher deposit. Once takes the risk, I might actually the plunge if something good comes up, everything will be clear.

what if the product is lost in transit? with GEB, 20north and icc there's a sense of security.

would amazon be willing to refund the money and take responsibility if such an event were to occur?

Amazon does deliver items in India, but I thought it was only limited to books and DVD's. I had ordered a Tintin set a couple of years ago and it arrived without any issues and no additional customs duty whatsoever.

Well, i was looking for some Smith & Wesson Tanto knives & a few Crosman Rifle equipments but none are shipped outside USA..... :(

Thanx for the info anyway..... :)

Would the customs even allow them in?

i had prefered to order a kindle directly throught amazon and it was a good experience. They used DHL, and I got the package withint four working days after being shipped.

The custom deposit collected was significant, and as of date, it has been more than three months and even though there was no customs charged, I have not seen the refund. I got refund for the kindle cover though. They will charge a part of that as import handling feees.

I have ordered the Monster turbine earphones. Lets see how it turns out. I am not sure whether I will get the parcel or not, as the shipping method is Expedited International Shipping.

Shipping Method: Expedited International Shipping

Shipping Preference: Group my items into as few shipments as possible

Shipping & Handling: $12.98

Delivery estimate: December 3, 2010 - December 15, 2010

Does amazon ship by USPS or through some other courier?

Same here (didnt order the cover) I am going to contact dhl tommrow and ask what was the custom duty. There was no customs invoice with the package.

Did you try contacting Amazon about the refund? Maybe they're processing, and since refunds would be credit back to your CC, there might be some delay.

yeah, I have contacted them regarding the same. Usually if you get a refund then, it is credited around the 2 month period after the purchase. Here they said that they were trying to get the status from DHL on weather the shipment was charged customs or not.

What I wanted to make clear is that the refund would take time. And mind you I noticed for my kindle cover that out of the deposit about $10 will be charged as handling for customs. No duty was charged so got about $7 in refund.

I will contact amazon and see if I get a different response.
