InPhase announces 300GB holographic discs

in phase laser holographic record Forget about perpendicular recording; that's so last week. If Colorado- based InPhase Technologies has its way, the next big advance in data storage will be holographic media. The company — which rolled out a prototype holographic drive earlier this year — announced today that it has produced a holographic disc that can hold 300GB on a single disc. InPhase says that the discs (which will be write-once media) and compatible drives should ship next year, with terabyte discs available by 2009. According to the company, its holographic technology records "through the full depth" of the storage media, and can record data a million bits at a time. We figure it should be able to hold our whole movie collection, with room left over for some lossless music as well.

Here's something better-

The Optware Holographic Versatile Card (HVC) is only as big as a credit-card but stores 30GB of data.

30GB is about 6 times more than a DVD can store and in closer to the capacity of next generation DVD formats like Blu-ray or HD DVD.

A HVC costs about 90 cents. A HVC drive is supposed to cost $1,800.

I am not sure where the market for the Optware HVC holographic disc will be.

More details on Nikkei.net (Subscription) and on the Optware site.

30gb in that MMC?

A 100 GB Quad Layer Blu-Ray!

There are technologies that exsist at perticular point.

Problem is end user does not always get the best of what can be made available.

In the end the business decisions, industry support and business sense that will decide what technology will fall into our hand in next couple of years.

There are handful of people that controls too big portion of the market. Like M$. it basically can decide what is success and whats failure.

Lets see, having portable storage device with soo much space would be nice.

Though idea of holographic storage is not so last week or new ;)

The thing with holographic memory is that it is ublikely to reach any standardisation soon. Once it becomes more commonplace that might happen. Until it does, there will be just a handful of manufacturers manufacturing media, and the corresponding drives, and that will keep prices up and out of the range of small enterprises/homes. It will be at least 4 or 5 years AFTER their initial introduction before they will become commonplace.
