I thought I'd share my sff rig from around 2013. I used it for about a year until I repurposed the parts into other builds. The only tools I had for this were a screw driver, zip ties and scissors so there was no modification involved.

Athlon X4 750K, XFX 7970, 16GB VLP (very low profile) DDR3, 240GB SSD, XFX 550w all inside of a Fractal Design Node 304. I really wanted this Phanteks hsf, but the AMD mounting holes would have the fans sideways. So I used an Enzotech socket adapter that mounted to the AMD motherboard and offered up Intel 115X pegs. It worked well enough for the X4 processor.

It was a fun a build but I moved on from it because Fractal Design's scandinavian design philosophy just didn't resonate with me. The case quality, finish was impeccable. But it was so understated that it felt suffocating. These days that's changing, I absolutely love their new Torrent.

The Athlon X4 SFF rig above was upgraded to an FX 9590 in an NZXT S340. I still remember how impressed I was with this case, it also marked my return to PC modding since the LGA775 days. I modded the power supply here with custom length cables for clean cable management. The 7970 was replaced by XFX with a 280x after an RMA.

This build won 'Job of the Month' over at r/cablemanagement a few years ago and was mentioned in a blog post or two.

I reuse the original connectors, it took a while to figure out how to remove the existing wires using micro screwdrivers. I was able to source the pins at an electronics component store locally, both the motherboard/cpu/pcie and molex. The sata connectors and pins I purchased from performance-pcs over a decade ago. For the actual wire, I purchased a 100m bundle of 1 sq mm wire from an electrical shop. They do have some really nice colour sometimes, there's a candy pink that I want to try using sometime. The biggest investment was a crimping tool, it was around 2k: https://www.google.com/search?q=sn-01b&source=lnms&tbm=shop

It takes around four to six hours to completely redo a power supply, but I haven't done one in years because we now have budget power supplies with all black cables. I really like Silverstone's VIVA's cables.

Here's a 2002 dell power supply I did a few years ago for an Athlon XP system. I sometimes use molex pins at the power supply (as you can see here) so that I can swap power supplies at a later date.

I was looking for all black cables but no 1 seems to have them. Do you have a brand name you can share please?

These are just regular almost generic finolex wires. I've been trying to source all black ribbon cables but the best option I've seen is an old 80pin ide cable.

And here I thought my cable management was good...:disappointed::disappointed::disappointed: . Anyway incredible job with the cable management, really went the extra mile.

Continuing the build evolution of my FX9590 rig, I then experimented with Makerbeam during most of 2015. This is a system of 10mm x 10mm aluminium profiles meant for DIY'ers. I purchased these from tinkerforge who are based in germany, ship out small orders using DHL International Post for under 10 euros, and these packages somehow have never attracted customs charges.

But first a celebration of the hardware involved, featuring my first ever flagship motherboard, the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7. Also here are Crucial's Very Low Profile (vlp) DDR3 modules, and that Phanteks heatsink.

Also here are Crucial's Very Low Profile (vlp) DDR3 modules, and that Phanteks heatsink.
this is porn

The Makerbeam experiment of 2015 ended with a 20.5 liter frame (200mm x 320mm x 320mm):
