PC Peripherals Your views of a wooden cabinet.

Rockfella

Total bliss!
ex-Mod
Hi all,
Tired of looking for a decent mAtx cabinet with a bottom mounted PSU in low price range i've decided to draft a design for a self home made wooden cabinet.
Prerequisites:
1) Bottom psu.
2) mAtx (Smallest size possible)
3) Rest you suggest....

Was wondering if a wooden cabinet has any pros and cons hence this thread. I've made wooden stuff before so keep that headache aside.

Thanks.

Vivek.

I have a wooden drawer pc. The main disadvantages I find are -

1) Wood is thicker.
2) Wood is more suited for things which you won't be fiddling with. e.g., even regularly removing and fixing screws in a wooden panel will ruin it. You'll have to get metal threads fitted for each screw hole if you want flexibilty.

1) I will try to get the thinnest wood possible.
2) I've made numerous kitchen cabinets/vhs tape stands in the past. I used rustfree high quality screws and made the whole damn thing in such a way that i was able to disassemble it after few years :) so these are not my concerns. I've seen your mod and it insprired me a lot. Urs is a drawer, i wanna make a cabinet which will work like an HTPC and in regular vertical orientation as well ... capable to hold and cool any gpu in the world, will try to increase size to hold atx mobos also. Thanks man.

Wood cabins are built coz they dont conduct heat. so question is the heat gets exhausted by steel n aluminum lot better and that might be one disadvantage. So may be higher CFM fans would be needed. 3-4 Delta ones as intake n exhaust.

but same can even work in favour as you can compartantmentalize the PSU so that maximum heat unit release air n heat out of the cabinet. Also the HDD could be kept away so that they remain relatively cooler.

Also dont know if the nuts n bolts will they loosen up with time. As metal n acrylic have move strength than wood. this is just a far flung thought.

Rest you need not worry about rust etc.... and ofcourse biggest plus is possibilities to customize.

Nope; same reason as above...wood would heat up a lot and even with that fan configuration it may be a bit of a pain to manage the air flow.

Possibilities to customize is the biggest and only reason for me to think dyi cabinet.

trust me you'll need to design your airflow properly or it'll damage your PC components...especially if there is a high end graphics card involved...

on the other hand you can really let your creativeness all out.

when i had decided to build or rather get one build, i was going for watercooling but since that plan didn't take shape i had to let go of the idea to build a wooden cabinet...nice to see someone else getting it going.....

Finishing is not a concern, i don't need ultra high end finish, just decent work, will paint it black.

if you pick right wood dont think finishing would be difficult... actually

Get a rubber wood board to do this project. You just need to sand it and not apply any finish over it. It would look excellent as it is.

Also plan the whole thing with a 8'x4' piece of board in your mind. So take out the panel dimensions first and then follow the project.

If you want i can do a rough sketch up for you for the same.

sir not to derrail your plan.... just a thought .... it would b Heavy also :)

Wooden computer case

i think i like this guys work. as inside metal gives may be earthing support also in case of current leak

Also

take a look at these links. Tried n tested ways could give you some ideas.

Redwood in Progress - a set on Flickr
SuperMegaMau's Wodden Case

really pain staking but some beautiful work .... n best part i feel following these are sort of functional also

I had it with 8 high cfm fans.. sold it, so done all that, need a compact/cool htpc kinda cabinet with bottom psu and a fanless cooled gpu :baby:

what about the cm 690...

its about 4k

as i see it Wood Case is something which would give lot of customisation and plus a unique signature on it ...

i am too tempted ... just need time.... n patience...
