Zero balance digital account with a number not linked to Aadhar

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a zero balance account for upi on my secondary number (don't care about any other feature/interest rates etc). The phone is mostly switched off (with call forwarding), and is used only when I travel.

I read somewhere that zero balance accounts only work with the aadhar linked number. Is it true?

Would love to hear from anyone who is using such an account. I was considering kotak 811.

Thanks

Well, I don't know if that's possible but I think you won't be able to open an 811 account.
RBI has stopped kotak from onboarding customer's online

For online accounts, KYC is done through Aadhar number and for it, you should have the same mobile which is registered with Aadhar.

I had heard about that. But they still seem to be offering similar products (they have added the word 'saving' in the name). No more 'limited KYC' or 'lite'.

What they offered earlier:

What they offer now:

Open account with primary number. Once opened and all set, change the mobile number to your secondary number after a week?
That is the plan. I was worried just in case they don't let me change my mobile number.

Did they ask you to open the FD to make it zero balance. Most banks will allow zero balance if you open an FD (e.g. in HDFC, you have to open a 100k FD if the minimum balance req is 10k).

I asked to open FD, they offered zero balance SB a/c along with FD.
So, in a way yes.

Sorry. One more question.

If you have enabled UPI on this account, I am assuming you are using the phone number linked with the bank and not the one linked to aadhar.

You can get a bank account with a different number. You can initiate a new bank account process with whichever number you wish. While doing the actual online KYC, the process will ask you for the Aadhaar linked number to fetch your details [Aadhaar will send OTP to your linked number].

UPI will work with the number that is linked to bank [not to Aadhaar]. You can have multiple UPI apps [gpay, phonepe, bhim etc] linked to different SIM numbers. That works

Thank you. Worked exactly the way you described it.

Looks like I can't change any contact info for six month (at least from Netbanking. There is prob a longer procedure that involves visiting the home branch with documents.).

Anyway, the bigger project has run into problems. My goal was to divide my financial life into two parts, main (for salary/investments) and everyday carry. I also wanted to stop lugging a big smartphone around. This Kotak acct and a Nokia 3210 were to be my new tools.

Two main issues with the 3210 (so far):
- The VPA it assigned is myNumber@airtel. I don't see an option for changing it. Would like one without my phone number.
- Poor QR code scanning capability. I have to go very close and hold my hand still.

If anyone knows how to fix the first one (i.e. get a custom VPA on 123pay), please help.

Your linked phone number with the vpa along with your full name as per linked bank acc is already visible in the bank statement of a merchant in case of merchant QR code txn & in case of personal acc transfer many banks show the sender's mobile no. linked to vpa.
