Zomato (Gold) Reduces Free Delivery Range to 7KM - Charges Extra Beyond That

If I wet the bed, does that make me cute?

So Zomato Gold (for all new renewals) has reduced the delivery range from 10km to 7km. All deliveries beyond 7km will be charged extra. They have also gotten rid of the "VIP access" feature.

To sum up:

  1. Free delivery range has been reduced from 10km to 7km. All deliveries beyond 7km will be charged extra
  2. Extra charge for "Priority Delivery"
  3. Platform Fees
  4. On-time guaranteed deliveries already eliminated earlier
  5. Zomato Legends suspended
  6. This is in addition to the 30-40% commission they charge restaurants, who in turn recover it from us by jacking up online menu prices and imposing "packing charges"
The actual (and only) benefit of Gold I see remaining is the dine-in discounts.

Swiggy hasn't stooped this low, yet (barring point 6).

This is good news for people like me who have poor impulse control and terrible financial sense.

Swiggy did announce and quickly withdrew a 12km free delivery range some time ago. They'll probably follow Zomato here and reduce theirs as well.

Maybe it's a seasonal thing, but it could also be a profitability thing. These food delivery apps have tremendous overhead, I have no idea how they expect to make a profit.

Some restaurants hover between 9.8km and 11.4km for me, which make no sense but I guess it could be more of a inaccurate distance calculator instead of a marketing gimmick.

Random: I recently had a parcel picked up from another member, the delivery person was compensated less than one-third of what swiggy charged me.

Now that they're listed, they don't have VC money to burn through. They first closed their RBL credit card, introduced platform fees, introduced priority fees and now this.

Swiggy aren't saints, once they go for their IPO, they'll do the same.

Just saw swiggy introduced swiggy one lite
Basically limited number of deliveries free per month for ig cheaper. Next i believe is them reducing the discounts they give on credit cards (10-15%).

WikiHow to burn cash.

Prefer homemade food so never even signed up lol.
I have no idea how they expect to make a profit.
Same. Unlike apparel, electronics and stuff along that, raw food material have generally fixed price(s). Add the cost of human labour in getting that cooked. One is always going to pay significantly more on these platforms than what they would by cooking themselves or getting the stuff straight from the restaurants.

Don't know about VIP/premium/luxury restaurants tho. They charge eye watering amounts for everyday stuff.

Zomato is A/B testing hidden auto tips to riders.

You wouldn't know that you tipped the rider unless you expand the calculations.

Happened twice with me. I got baffled by message from rider thanking me for the tip.

On the plus side, 3 months of membership was Rs 30, ha

The shitty thing is this priority and standard delivery thing. Charging extra and then both ways almost take the same amount of time, sometimes priority things take more time too.

I used Swiggy's 'genie' service to pick up a package from another member — they charged me 450 but paid out less than 120 to the delivery person.

But on another occasion when I ordered from a far-off restaurant at 3am, order total was 187, and the delivery person was compensated 151.

Looks like they're reinventing math and profitability.

Where are you from? It's still showing me 149 in BLR

The changes come after you renew Swiggy One.

Time to stick to EatSure (limited restaurants, but far more reasonable, for now).
They're also slowly changing and charging more. They've added membership with their points system and reduced giving away free dishes like they used to.
Also initially delivery was free regardless of order value or memberships, there used to be more coupons which were applicable.

They'll be there alongside Zomato and Swiggy one day, very soon.

Ola is currently running their ondc offers now. Free delivery and 50% off upto 350rs. Real time customer support however is nonexistent so if someone runs away with your tandoori chicken (it has happened to me recently lol) then you'll have to send some emails back and forth to get a refund unfortunately. But otherwise it's quite nice. Orders get delivered by different delivery partners. Will abuse the offers until they stop it lol (and it has been going on for more than a month now). After that I'm ditching it for swiggy as I don't order often. I suppose for you guys who order regularly it must be getting more expensive.
