Looking for a 32" TV in the 30k range. I believe LED is the preferred choice and I've been told Samsung is the best brand.

1. Budget.
30k
2. Viewing distance.
~10ft

3. Sources/inputs such as HD DTH/consoles/stand-alone media players etc.
DTH mostly Indian channels
Movies (from BluRay/laptop),
Gaming (from PS3 & PC both)
4. Preference for plasma TV/LCD TV/LED-LCD TV.
LED

5. Preference for brands.
Samsung/LG/Sony

6. Willing to purchase it from the grey market?
No

7. Ambient lighting conditions of the room.
Normal daylight / CFL (not too bright usually). But night time (no lighting) usage as well.

8. Any other feature you are looking for such as 3D support on the HDTV, DLNA capabilities etc.
Not specifically. If it can playback video formats such as .mkv that should be fine.
Also, D-Sub port would be a plus although not really necessary.

I would love to have some technical insight and suggested model numbers so I can make an informed decision. I can extend the budget if necessary.

Other queries :

1. For 1080p content being played, is difference between 720p and 1080p displays that obvious from a viewing distance of 8-10 feet?
2. Which company offers good warranty (extended)?
3. How to best test or compare TVs in a store?

Afaik, the difference between 720p and 1080p get prominent when you have a screen size >40"
With the viewing distance you have mentioned, i think 720p will do just fine.

Panasonic provides maximum warranty - 3 yrs. Not sure about the extended one.
I would still prefer a Samsung panel for the ease of playback feature. It supports all the formats one would watch a movie in.

About testing, my experience was very frustrating, as the showroom in C.P (New Delhi) wont let me check/change the setting in the menu. Nor will he confirm if the LCDs are running on stock settings or not.

Check this thread for some pointers.. i think this one was the latest when a good discussion was held:

adder Step up pls. :)

Nice guys, thank for the information. Will have a look at those two models mentioned by universal.

Looking forward to more guidance and suggestions.

Regarding 1080p/720p, I will be checking out a friend's 32" 720p Sony to see how 720p content (movies and PS3) looks from a distance.

With a 32" you can't notice the difference between 1080p and 720p at 10 feet. However the 1080p panels may have a higher contrast ratio and even a high color bit panel.

You can go with the samsung series 5 LED-LCD they have great contrast ,supports lots of media formats, the ES series is a bit better then the EH series. However you will have to check whether they come with a D-SUB connector.

Either 720p OR 1080p will not matter. However, 1080p panels are preferred. Unless you are getting a good deal on a 720p panel, stick to 1080p.

Extended Warranty - Croma. Pay extra, but extended warranty will be handled by them, not manufacturer.

D Sub port. its common on most of the TV's. Be shocked if you do not find it.

For comparison, take a pen drive and fill it with movies of your choice. Ensure that you take a mkv file at least, with DTS audio as that is the most common content on the net, so that you do not ned to remux if needed.

I would suggest to visit the various offline stores on or around the 26th, you may get some good offers. I got a good deal for a 32 incher 720p TV from Croma during Diwali.

VU is a good brand, however, unless you see it in stores, do not buy it. Check a demo of the same.
Yeah, planning to go to Croma this week. Also, which TV did you buy and price (if you don't mind telling).

Croma 32 incher 720P LED TV. Cost me 25490, came with Philips DVP3608 dvd player + DSP30U speakers + Croma photo frame. cost of 2 yrs extended warranty cost me 1.3k. got 2k off for old crt.

All in all, came to ~25K.

The model comes with 2 USB ports, plays all videos, including the ones with DTS audio.

Yeah, I remember seeing Croma branded stuff as well. How's the TV coming along (I'll have a look at that as well now).

And good thing you reminded about the CRT exchange, I'll be looking to sell or trade in mine. Thanks for your inputs, man. Much appreciated.

i will suggest LG 32LS4600 (internet tv) ...31K lil bit higher than your budget. :)
other option will be samsung 32eh5000r , practically plays all format via usb.
The cheapest Samsung 32" FullHD LED at FK and official stores is priced around 32k.

But some ebay/rediff/indiatimes sellers have it for 27k onwards (possible grey market). Some offering servepro warranty upto 2years.

Thought this might be a little over your budget, but I saw this great deal on FP (or it might not be a great deal but simply the fact that I've been out of the price game for quite some time )

LG 42CS470 LCD 42 inches Full HD Television - LG: Flipkart.com

Specs -

Full HD Support
42 inch LCD Display - 1920 x 1080 resolution
1 HDMI Port
IPS Advanced LCD Panel
USB movie playback

All this for Rs. 37990.

Good deal or catch or these prices are now normal? I paid 57k for my Sony 40" around 1.8 years back so I might be a bit behind the curve.

After an initial look at the TVs in store, and extensive testing at a friend's place, I have come to the conclusion that 40/42" TV is what I should purchase.

So the question is : LCD/LED. My friend's TV is a Samsung 40" LCD, and I had no issues with the PQ whatsoever (that is usually the primary point in the LCD/LED discussion). I'll prefer LED, but a well-priced (<35k) LCD TV with all good features would be just as good.

So I've upped my budget to 50k (I know...) . I'm intrigued by the Vu LED42K21, great features for its price.

However, fresh suggestions keeping in mind a budget of 50k would be most welcome.
vivek.krishnan , Sei : your inputs would be much appreciated

Some options :

Toshiba <- Any experiences?
VU <- My first choice, it is very slim
LG <- Not very keen, but it is within budget, and LG supposedly making decent TVs, so.
Samsung <- Fatter than an LCD

I need to find out Panasonic options as well, heard some good things about them lately.

If you are ok with without bill , samsung eh5000r ~35k , 6030r(3D) ~46k and sony ex650 at < 48k.
or else samsung eh5000r will be good bet.

heard good reviews for panny e5d series.

i am also going to buy 40" led (from grey market),shortlisted sammy e5000r / if i increase budget then choice will be between sony ex650 n samsung6030r

Nah man, looking at warranty (as a matter of fact, will probably opt for extended warranty, hence not ordering from FK).

Presently will either opt for the LED Samsung EH5000R (~50k) or any LCD within 35k (most probably VU 40").
