Yes it was increased, its now 7% as mentioned by karankapoor.

Now importing things wouldnt be a cost effective afair as before... I so wanted to buy this cellphone but with the increase in custom duty charges i wonder how much the overall cost would turn out to be once the cellphone hits the indian soil after ordering it... :(

@varkey those rates have been taken from Tariff book by the Indirect Tax team in my office. Specialists in the field so i wont doubt them.

benryu : No offense, but I don't think they gave you right tariff.

The HS code for mobile phones is 85171290 or 85171210. In 2010/2011 it was just 1% CVD plus cess but later Additional CVD of 1% was added to it making it 2.x %. I've been importing phones from 2010 through Aramex / Fedex / DHL etc and I've never paid duty for phones at the rate you quoted. You may want to double check with them.

PPbox says I should generate a unique package ID before buying the phone and add that to my name when buying, but that requires an Order no which im assuming Google will only give me after purchasing. What do I do ?

Not really required, you could just give the PPO ID in the address and generate the unique id once its shipped.

Even if you want to create the unique id beforehand, you could always edit the order id and shipping details after placing the order.

Btw is anyone in Bangalore interested in one Nexus 4 16GB ? My friend wanted one and it would be cheaper to order two. PM me if interested and I can place the order and split the costs at actuals.

Please don't PM me anymore, prime would be taking one unit. I just placed the order from Play store, hope they ship it soon. :)

Has anyone bought old/used models from ebay / other sites and got them shipped through PPObox? do they charge customs for the new item or only for what we paid?
