What is the mentality of people of Tamil Nadu who are protesting against Jayalalitha's conviction?

These people are mad. They should have benefited in one or the other way. Hence agitating.
I know of a family who got benifitted under lower powertyline due to the YSR in AP.They actually are not poor. Have own house and are middle class. They still think he is a god. It's the same case with people admitting jagan.
OT, but look at this cartoon in a local news paper on the next day the judgement came out. Really loved it to the core. All the politicians/big guys that are facing allegations in courts are watching jaya walking to Jail from the corridor.

I still don't this. When Lalu, Kalmadi, Raja, etc. were jailed, nobody except their party workers protested that too not in such overwhelming manner.
I do not understand that how could educated general public protest against the courts ?
This is not protest in support of Jaya but against our judicial system. It makes me sad that these are the same people who later agitate against corruption and demand justice in courts when crimes are committed against them.

What makes you think general public are protesting? In TN all media is controlled by two-three parties, who magnify a protest of 10 people. And across India they just replay these feeds.

The public outcry is clearly from the underprivileged part of society, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, due to the insane freebies, subsidized rations, cheap food, which the party gave.

Rs.66 crs gone? That is nothing. Imagine how much tax-payers' money is going into providing mixies, tvs, laptops, saris.

No matter how much one tries to explain to non-South Indians the reasons behind such adulation and frenzy, I don't think they can ever understand it. Mind you, I am not defending this buffoonery by any means but I do understand where it is coming from. When you control the very means through which information is disseminated to the populace, you end up wielding enormous amounts of influence over them. And it's not as if there are no parallels as you go north. I remember the chaos and near-curfew that ruled most of Maharashtra when Bal Thackeray was arrested for ONE DAY only. I was in school back then and we were let off early just to make sure that nothing drastic happens.

Also, remember the time when the entire nation wondered how people in TN go gaga when a Rajini movie releases (milk abhishekam for his cut-outs, fasting for movie's success and all similar nonsense); what's happening now is just the other side of that coin.

I think those two Quora posts I linked above have done a wonderful job in trying to explain this situation. There are lakhs of people in TN (among them my grandfather; an entire lifetime spent as a saw-mill worker) who almost worship MGR like a demi-god after close to 30 years of his passing. To further get an idea of the kind of influence and popularity these leaders enjoyed, just watch the funeral videos of leaders like Kamaraj, Annadurai, and MGR on YouTube.

The only reason she's getting away with such brazen giveaways is TN's surplus budget!

But I did see filmstars sitting on dharna and schools & colleges being closed as protest. Are they also controlled by political parties?

They swing with the tide !!

And more importantly, DMK family is actively into film financing apart from running its own cable network and producing/telecasting TV serials. Same holds for ADMK; cable network in addition to deep influence in film distribution. Kamal Hassan's Vishwaroopam's debut through private DTH providers was opposed big time by the state's distributor fraternity. Who helped him out and had the final word... Amma!

And as for schools and colleges, you would have never asked this question if you know who are the people behind them. Maharashtra, Andhra and TN are quite similar in that respect.

I'm from TN, I'm educated, i support Amma, i dont trust our judicial system, i dont support Aam admi because they are against corruption because i live by bribing... AND I represent entire TN people!...

@All

Whatever you do, people(read as poor) here won't change, because of all the freebies in pipeline. Even few educated people fall for this crap, so it is nothing but political way to make people fall in their trap and be lazy!

What about TOI and HT. Those would not be controlled by the DMK and AIDMK parties..? What papers these parties own. Are they like the Dainek Jagran of here, which the normal public (non-English) read..?

English dailies don't hold a candle to regional ones!

Vernaculars wield the most influence. That applies to almost all of India as you have stated there with the Jagran example.
Dinakaran, which first began as a DMK leaning paper before it was acquired by Maran's Sun Network, usually trades spots with Dinathanthi as TN's No. 1 daily as far as readership is concerned. Dinathanthi though is considered to be neutral.

EDIT: My grandpa is of the opinion that Dinamalar, another one of TN's leading dailies, displays ADMK leanings.

How does thackeray's sway on people compare with MGR or Karuna ?

There are similarities but (given those quora posts) TN is unique and that i think nobody else in the country comes close, because Karuna was a script wirter & MGR a movie star, Thackeray was just a cartoonist (his son is only a beneficiary without any of the pull of the father). At the same time there probably won't be anyone able to fill their shoes after after they pass on.

I think that now, more than ever, choosing a politician/political party is now about who is the lesser corrupt. Sad.

As for J, she really has done some good stuff. I had gone for a visit last month, and was really surprised. Hell, Mumbai cannot hold a candle to the excellent infrastructure build up that has taken place.

It simply doesn't!

MGR and Karuna's sway actually turned into TN assembly majority on more than once occasion, thus proving it was no single wave/fluke. All of Thackeray's might could only result in one term at the helm of Maha and that too in a partnership with BJP. That they rule Mumbai municipality is a different matter altogether.

He was a rung or two below MGR and Karuna in the sense that the latter two transcended regional and caste barriers. SS held (does still) sway over urban worker class but lost out on support from OBCs, farmer and rural community.

So yes, you are right, TN is unique in every sense of the term!

Err what infra ? If you talking about highways, unless a cut was given to "them" work was not allowed to progress. And most of infra has taken place using central grant and soft loans. Tneb is in a huge mess, and there was hike recently and one more coming in 2015.
Tneb is also screwing up wind mill power producers by giving low tariff and not making 'payment s for ,power purchased.
I aint a fan of amma or ayya( )!!,: but I clearly remember the way the looted people in my city in 1991-1996! Just walk into any Jewellery shop and took what they fancied. Likewise land , hotels and stuff were also taken. What she did is at state level, and what he did was at national level ( oh, if given a chance to come to power at centre )she would prove herself better than every one else in looting .

^I thought TN has the cheapest power tariffs and bus fares comparing other southern states....this is even after last increase!
