Budget 31-40k Need laptop to last for many years

Emil

My son-in-law needs a laptop in Goa. His present laptop is a Lenovo G450 Core2Duo which he wants to replace.
He is a doctor, a complete non-techie and since I am in Pune, I cannot help him.
The new laptop should have Windows 10 and MS Office lifetime license installed.
I have recommended him i3 8th or 10th generation, 8 GB RAM desired but 4 GB at least, 256 GB SSD or 1 TB HDD and FHD display depending on availability.
Service availability in Goa is probably limited. They have Lenovo close by and also HP. Dell is also there but a little further away.
His usage will mostly be documents creation and Powerpoint presentations. I am not familiar with the relative merits of AMD vs Intel currently.
Any assistance in specifying the right configuration will be of great help. Identifying the best options available will be even better.
Budget lower the better but should be under 33K or so.

Should I consider Ryzen 3 as better bang for the buck? Note that the laptop is absolutely not required for gaming.

Hi Emil

To be very honest, It is very difficult to find all the specs you have mentioned within the budget you have mentioned especially the "last for many years" part because most of what they sell in India below 50k is of dubious quality. However, having said that, please check out these options which are slightly above your budget and have the basics that you want. 8GB is the standard and ideal nowadays, also from a future perspective but RAM can be always added later on.

The third one from Amazon ticks all your boxes but has a 14 inch screen.

https://bit.ly/2Yk01Uy - the package but doesn't have MS Office.

I really don't understand why people buy expensive laptops for regular home use. Buy the cheapest laptop you can find which has all the features and config that you need and throw it away when it fails! Because it will, sooner than later, and repairing a laptop is usually a futile exercise.

1366x768 display

Not available for his pincode

14" is fine but I will have to add in extra memory when I go there. Secondly, the Lenovos at this price bracket are mostly equipped with VGA webcam and that might be a deal breaker for him. He has a lot of online meetings. I didn't see it mentioned in the specs though.

As you say, no MSO, also 1366x768 display and Sold out
Thanks for the inputs though.
How about Ryzen 3 laptops?

I checked the Lenovo official site - it has a 0.3 M camera. So, yes it can be a deal-breaker I guess. Ryzen 3 should be fine for his needs if you're getting one.

I concur this. It is a struggle with oneself that eveyone goes through especially with so many options. And the thing that works against ourselves is that we first decide to buy something (expensive) and then start convincing ourselves as why I should spend more on the higher priced version.

I am planning to get iPad this year. I have almost decided on getting the cheapest model as It is more of a recreational device. But then thoughts start coming. Would iPad Air be better. It is 15K more. But wow that laminated screen and extra storage would be awesome. I plan to use for 7-8 years so why not spend now instead of regretting later. Air has True tone while cheaper ipad doesn't (i dont even know what the hell true tone is)
This is the conversation I have with myself.

There are some things that i believe you should not cheap out on and should get good quality even if the price is high.
Laptops unfortunately, are not one of those devices.
Back when i was recommending 20-25k laptops to everyone asking for advice, my cuz decided to buy one for about 38k. It was kinda mid range at the time. His usage? Internet and movies. He said it has so and so graphics card etc. He doesn't game at all. Well after a few years of use, the display is messed up, the wifi module stopped working and get keyboard has been acting up for a while. If it was a 20k laptop it would have been much easier for him to throw it away and get a new one rather than use a wifi dongle, external keyboard (not such a bad idea though) and squint at the screen.

What you're saying makes sense but the user is a doctor and is not too comfortable with tech changes. Too steep learning curve. So it is better to get him a laptop that will not be entirely obsolete in a short time. Essential requirements: Running Windows 10 and MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint), Online meetings, Offline presentations. What configuration would you recommend?

The slowest and weakest configuration available today would be overkill for that application. Basically anything will do the job. Since it's windows 10 though, 8gb ram is recommended, though even 4 will work.

The laptops i mentioned in this post are close to 30k and have full HD screens. More than enough for the usage your SIL has. Both were on sale for close to 26k a week ago.

Both are not available. The first one is not available the the user's pincode and the second is out of stock

Click on where to buy and enter pin code. It will show a list of shops/malls nearby. If any one has it luckily you might be able to buy. I'm guessing work from home and online schooling has made most of the low end laptops out of stock in most shops now.

Dell has New Vostro 15 3580 with the Pentium Gold CPU priced at 28K. This looks like it should be OK?
The cpu aint good.
If the user is ok with used laptops TE market got some...
I just picked a Ryzen 5 in just 19k for my brother...Acer, 14 months old, 8gb ram, 1tb + 256gb ssd. Both the ram and ssd is under warranty for next 3yrs.

My brother was pissed of with his Lenovo i5 for last 4yrs and recently it was giving all sort of problems. He swore never ever to opt for any laptop but destiny had a diff. plan.. His office work stuck & building a rig, assembling, DOA worries etc. would have costed a lot of time and investment.
So this laptop deal was rather a surprise boon for him..

Nobody is getting a deal as good as that one soon man... ;)

I would suggest @Emil stick to a new laptop for warranty and peace of mind.

I never said so..just suggesting him to keep an eye. There are quite a few laptops on sale if he is in for a used one. He has freedom of speech to ask whatever queries he wishes to and even bargain further..

Nothing to react to, i meant especially since he's a doctor and non-techie, a new one would be better. There's always the chance that a used laptop is being sold due to some undisclosed issues.

How does being a doctor matter in this case? If he needs technology he has to learn it. Using a laptop for basic MS office , email, surfing is not exactly rocket science.
Get the cheapest ThinkPad you can get from ebay (4th gen i5) upgrade the RAM, install an SSD of semi decent size, it will last for years to come.
Nothing new at 30k INR will last more than 2/3 years.

Or

There are the only good ones that are currently being delivered to Goa. All the rest are either out of stock or not deliverable.
The 8gb ram models are all above 39k currently at least on flipkart.
A friend of mine bought the laptop in the link below just at the start of this month which has an i3 with 8gb ram and was for 33k. But its out of stock now

@Julian is right. I went through recent FS posts and there is nothing remotely like a good deal. @red dragon being a non-techie doctor is key here. You need a tool, you don't want to be bothered with something unreliable. You have to have confidence in the unknown tool and expect it works the way you think it is supposed to.
