No, absolutely not. It depends on your refresh rate obviously but I would say that anything beyond a gtx 1080/RTX 2060 is overkill at that resolution even at 144 Hz. Now if you plan on upgrading to a higher res monitor you can consider a 3070 but you won't be able to spot a difference compared to a 2060 on your 1080p screen in most games.
I have a 2080 Ti for 1440p 165 hz but I'd happily play 1080p 144 hz on a 1070

Basically the same situation as you. 1080p 144Hz is superb already and you only need like a 1080 Ti at max

For RTX you need a 2070S, right? or a 3060 atleast for 1080p gaming with RTX.

I just made benchmark videos to show what my 3900x and RTX 2080 do at 1440p ultra on HZD and F1 2020. Avg of 70 fps in HZD and over 100 in F1 2020. So for 1080p even a 2080 is overkill kind of, 3070 if its like a 2080TI def will be.

Do you stream live too ? What nitrate do you use and also is encoding done via 3900x or rtx 2080.

so what should i buy for 2k gaming.3070 or 3080?.or shoud i go for 4k monitor if i plan to buy 3080
regards
for 2K gaming the 3070 makes perfect sense! But if you want to get a 3080 then i suggest you wait for 3080Ti/S which will have more vram. 10GB is probably not enough for 4K gaming with external 4k visual mods you will definitely need more than 10GB for older games at least. Maybe the new games will utilize the G6X ram better and not require more vram but you never know.

Imo you can go for 3070, only if you are planning to upgrade your monitor to 4k hdr tv.
For high fps gaming monitor ,it depends how good your CPU is.

It all depends on your taste. Some prefer playing at 1080p at higher refresh rates. Some prefer 1440p at lower refresh rates.

Graphically 1440p is more satisfying. More details and more immersive. But I have seen some competitive players downscaling to 1080p on a 27 inch 1440p monitor running on RTX 2080Ti! Coz in compe you don't have much interest to enjoy the details in atmosphere etc.. So you need to decide what you want.

If you have budget for 3080 then go for it, you can do games like Zero Dawn or RDR2 1440p at 120 fps + avg

TBH , i havent seen or even gamed on 1440p ... just waiting for my 3080 GTX to arrive when my brother comes and i have a normal 1080p monitor only.. Will game on it for a while and upgrade later..
Also with 3080 GTX , i feel monitors will also start lowering thier price..
