Why do people buy the Apple watch with its poor battery life?

Why do people buy this watch when it is such a headache with poor battery life? Not only do you have to charge the watch everyday, you also have to charge a charger for the watch because it doesn't even last a day.

well for one its accurate. And the "ecosystem", battery life never bothered me especially since I generally take my watch off before going to sleep. Its become habitual that I don't even have to think about it.

Yeah, not a problem if taking it off is part of the routine, like when bathing. Also, initially I had the hesitance of switching off the always-on display on my Series 6, but later realised that it is pointless to have it on all the time. That alone makes the watch last 2 days.

However, really like where watchOS 9 is heading with probably the best running app and finally inclusion of sleep stages.

Probably that is the best part of owning an Apple product apart from the ecosystem benefits, that it gets additional features over time in software. They do it slowly to milk their latest products, but at least the old products are not completely left out.

Bud the apple watch is probably one of the best lifestyle+ fitness watch there is in the market. One may counter with some android watches and the features they have but how many of them do people actually put to use. The features apple watch comes with are quite handy and you find yourself using them here and there. As far as the battery life is concerned. Its a generic thing for people to take off the watch when they go to sleep. All you have to do it just place it on the charger. That's all. You wont even realize and you would've adapted to the process. To top it off, if you have multiple apple devices, the ecosystem apple has is too damn good to let go. The sheer convenience of it all is why people buy this watch.
I have been using one myself for 5 years now.

It is anything but convenient to charge another device everyday or sometimes, multiple times a day.

Unless you're a fitness freak or don't like to have your phone with you at all times, there's absolutely no need to get an Apple Watch or any smart watch for that matter. Most people I see using smart watches buy it for show-off or use the features for the first couple of days, and then continue to use them like any other regular watch.

Moreover, these smart watches have insanely shorter lifespan - around 3-5 years at maximum. Over time they get sluggish due to software updates & unusable due to lousy battery life. Not to mention, they still cost so much even after all these years of technological innovation.

Regular watches are still the king.

I disagree. I moved to Apple iPhone 13 + Apple Watch series 7. Earlier I had Oneplus 8 + Amazfit GTR 2e. Earlier, I had to charge the phone and the watch separately. Though the watch battery would last a week, I still have to pull out a charger, connect it to wall and charge the phone. OP8, anyways need daily charging.

For Apple Watch and iPhone, I purchased a 3-in-1 wireless charger. Now, I do not look for a charger. Whenever I do not use the phone, I place it on charger. The same is the case with the watch. I do not really think of charging it. When I take the watch off at some time of day (say during bath or when I dont want to wear it), I hang it on the stand and it charged.

Earlier, I had to look for battery warning to charge devices. Now, the charging happens and I never think of charging the phone or watch.

And, when I compare GTR 2e and Apple watch w.r.t features, 2e does not even come close. Apple Watch is on a different level.

Can you share the link for that charger ?
This is a slow charger. I think it charges phone at 7.5W, charged droid compatible phones at 15W though. The same company has magsafe charger that charges phone faster. But then, if you are like me, charging speed does not matter at all.

I am not sure who told you that apple watch charge wont last a day? I have Apple Watch Series 7 and battery easily lasts a day. This, after I do bicycle ride with GPS tracking (1hour-2 hours). Have you come to this conclusion by using it or are you just saying it because you read it on internet?

Not just Apple watch, any damn smart watch.

I'm still on a G-shock and see no need for any smart watch. It stays on when i sleep as i'd rather use it to check time than a phone.

Battery is still going three years later :woot:

When they came out I remember people justifying it by saying they could check messages or get alerts when in a meeting without having to look at the phone.

It's another screen you can wear so the use case is getting alerts of some sort in a more convenient form factor.

Just curious, what is the usecase if a watch. Almost everyone around me wears an apple watch. My wife uses a fitbit that cost 9k. She just uses it for step counting and sleep tracking. Charges every 4 days i think. What extra does a 30-40k smartwatch offer. If i dont fancy reading messages on my watch screen, do i really need a watch.

I lift twice a week in a fixed routine and dont need to track anything about the calories i burned in the gym.

What exactly does a smartwatch help do?
Asking because the downsides are significant- more wires, one more device that needs to be charged, one more screen to look at that i will compulsively keep looking at every 30s. Whats the upside.

Haha. The things you wrote as cons are considered pros by the people above you.

regarding wires, one single wire charges my phone, watch and I can use the same for airpods (wireless 3-in-1), all at same time. Read my previous post to know more.

Let me tell you few scenarios where Apple watch or a proper smartwatch helps:
1. I was riding scooter, wife being pillion rider. I asked her to set route to destination as I was not sure. She uses K20 Pro. She was struggling to find the location. I just lifted my left hand, called Siri on apple watch and asked to set route. Few seconds later, I was getting turn by turn directions on my watch. I dont even have to lift as I get vibrations when a turn comes up.
2. When I have to take a quick call (incoming call), I just take it from watch and end it. Helps a lot when you are riding a bike. I stop by the side, quickly speak on watch, cut the call on watch and move on. No need to pull the phone out, push it through helmet or hold it near mouth.
3. The kind of stats that I get from my rides (i ride bicycle every weeekend and I take 30-50km rides), only Fitbit comes close. I had Amazfit GTR 2e and the heart rate sensing on that was absolute bullshit. Also, that watch would take about a minute or two to get the GPS lock while it takes few seconds for Apple Watch to get a lock. This matters a lot when you are planning to do 50km ride to the dot.
4. I have configured my portfolio in Apple's stocks widget and I get to see simple stats right on my watch, any time. No need to open the phone and see them.
5. There are few more features that are fun to use. Few of them being the live heart beat iMessage that you can send, walkie talkie, full querty keyboard.
6. Quick note dictation. Big time saver for those who often use this feature to quickly jot notes on phone 7.
7. For those who need motivation to have active lifestyle, those three rings on Apple Watch are extremely good to push people to be more active and to work out more.
8. If you are in country where Apple Pay works, paying using the Apple Watch is just brilliant. You have to use it to know how amazing it is. I was in Singapore once and almost everyone with Apple device pays using their watch. Whenever my colleagues come here, they do the same at places like Starbucks. It just works.
9. Fall detection. When you have a hard fall, your watch detects that and calls to pre-set number. In USA, it can call to 911 if you do not respond.
10. These premium watches track heart rate lot better and are lot accurate. Apple Watch can detect irregular heart rhythm and notify you. There are stories where folks had life saving surgery as they were warned by watch (no symptoms for them whatsoever). Though the built-in ECG on Apple watch is a single lead ECG, it is just enough to know if your heart rhythm is good.
11. There are lot of activity tracking that these premium watches are so much better (swimming, sailing, surfing etc). What is the need to get stats? These stats add bit of fun and push you more to do better.

What I am trying to say here is that you can live without a smart watch and it is your choice. But if you do not use one the way it can be used, if you do not use it to its best potential, you will never know how good it is.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I can clearly see why some people may find a watch a good convenience. Seems it’s like a miniature and more convenient version of a phone then.
Also yes, stats are certainly important. They make the world gamified.

These usecases don’t really appeal to me but at least now it makes sense why a market for 40k watches exists.

:D . On a fun note, take a look at these cheeky ads. They are fun:

Series 6:
Series 7:

All gadgets have use cases I guess.

I for one, was never in the Apple ecosystem, but now have a Mac Mini and an Ipad. They are useful devices for work/entertainment at home respectively

The Iphone or Macbook Pro still seems way too expensive for me though. The new Air is in the same league.

Apple watch or other smartwatches are not for me. I have worked in the outdoors for some time now, and so I wanted a Garmin watch.

The one I own currently is the Garmin Fenix 5x. It has all the features I need, and can show notifications if I need it to. I don't use that feature, as it becomes too intrusive.

For someone who wants to track their daily workouts, any fitness watch, including the Apple watch are good tracking devices. It gives you feedback to keep you motivated.

For long GPS use, such watches are not ideal though. Also, they are not as rugged as a Garmin.

So, to each their own I guess. People here have shared lots of good reasons for owning an Apple watch.

The latest updates to WatchOS are quite interesting. I was following the WWDC, and they are offering some good tech around running.

Still not proven though, so I will wait and watch ;-)

That's the general idea. Maybe one day it could replace a phone.

People also say a phone can replace a PC which in my experience just isn't true.

These usecases don’t really appeal to me but at least now it makes sense why a market for 40k watches exists.
Neither for me. So it's still a niche thing. Not yet become general purpose.

+1 on that. Smartwatches today are a thing of show for a major chunk of people. Even for me, regular watches are the OG.

People use many things as show off. But that is not the criteria to say that the product is not required.
I was staunchly against a smart watch and I thought people using Apple Watch or a galaxy watch were crazy. Till I saw the use cases and dived in.

Now, about lag. Before I purchased series 7, I tried the series 3. It was just as fast, no lag. These are not Android wear devices that have laggy UI as a feature. Battery deteriorated and after few years, you can get a new battery installed if you are happy with the Watch. It costs far less than what you have to pay for a new Watch.

people used to have a same landline phone for decades. One phone would last looooong time, no charging required. That did not stop them from using mobile phone. Look at where those landlines are. Traditional watches are dying and that is a fact. My fossil watch that I used for a decade is now lying in cabinet as it has become irrelevant. This is the story in most households.

I guess you got me wrong on the smartwatch part. It is pretty decent in what it does. I myself have a series 3. I bought it in 2017 on release. Though I dont feel the need to upgrade because it does the job for me that I intend for it to do. What I meant with the statement before was smartwatches in general are fine but a large chunk of people buy it today because they consider it a statement and about the same amount of people would've barely used any features on the watch either. As far as the standard watches are concerned. I found this habit that I took overtime that I stopped using my standard watches and leaned more towards the smart watch. I personally prefer the standard watches mainly because I love them and they are a timepiece. All because I have a particular watch from 1999 that was handed down to me by my father and damn that watch is fine. Its an Omega Seamaster for the curious souls.
