What are you trying to cook? You can cook a full chicken bird or medium size pizza in a 30L oven. 60L will be nice to have if somebody wanted to cook multiple things at the same time.

Cakes, Pizza, Cookies and what not. right now no non - veg :p

Also, your list includes Microwave ovens too. Do you already have a microwave oven and looking to buy a standalone OTG? or are you looking to buy all in one ie microwave + grill + convection?

Didn't agree with his recommendations on washing machines this Vineet Malhotra
Oh. Is that why this list is called 'VM'? :pompus: :p:p:p:p

Decide what you want first. microwave with a convection oven. no microwave just OTG, something else?

Then make a shortlist

OTG is better than Microwave right, we can control temperature and all stuff. As i said, Cakes, Pizza's, Cookies, Tikkas and all will be cooked. in it.

OTG (that's grill and convection) isn't better than microwave. These are all different things altogether and used for different cooking methods.

Generally speaking microwave is used 95% of times. Most of the times an oven is used to warm cold food and for that microwave is the perfect tool. It can warm food in just 30 seconds whereas if you had to use grill or convection mode of the oven then it'll take like 10 minutes for that. You can also do most of general cooking with microwave. Poha, khichadi, even tea etc are very easy to do on microwave mode. You can easily defrost stuff on microwave.

Grill and convection modes are very niche compared to microwave. If this is your first time getting an oven then make sure microwave is the priority. 3 in 1 combo microwave ovens are normal these days. 3 in 1 means the oven can cook in any of the microwave, grill and convection mode. People who buy an OTG already have a microwave oven laying around and they want a dedicated oven for some special needs.

You can get a microwave convection grill oven of ~30L capacity at around 10 to 15k. That's what everyone does. Some people never ever use convection or grill of the ovens, yeah it's that niche compared to microwave. Get any brand that you like but in the end it doesn't matter as all ovens are made by the same company called Midea in china.

A 30L convection/microwave oven has enough space to make a 11inch pizza. Cakes and what not.

My LG 32L convection oven consumes 2700watt when the top grill heater and convection fan heater is On.

Hmm, this is turning a decoction process into an infusion. Not the same thing.

We don't plan to use microwave to heat food. device will be used purely for cooking purpose. even defrosting is out of question.

If you want a good quality oven, buy a built in Bosch, Siemens or Miele. All cost a good chunk of money but last almost forever.

For toasting bread, buy a panini grill.

Whether you use microwave or convention depends on whether you're into baking or not. I love to bake and I use convection mode far more often than Microwave (time wise at least, microwave gets used a lot on short bursts to heat stuff).

OTG is better than Microwave right,
As already pointed out, these are two different things and can't be compared. In Indian homes, baking is not that common, hence microwave gets used more and combo-ovens are preferred. But combo ovens are horrible if your primary purpose is baking.

I cannot stress this enough, if your primary purpose is baking cakes and pizza, do not buy a combination oven. Here are the two most common reasons for this:
  1. Combination ovens have a rotating plate. Hence, even if the capacity is same as an OTG, you can't put wide trays inside as they will get stuck while rotating.
  2. The electronics in a combination oven are not built to withstand the stress of baking. In one and half yes, I had to get my LG oven repaired twice. It just couldn't stand the heat of convection cooking for long times. Consequently I stopped baking in it altogether. I'm yet to get an OTG though since there's no space in my kitchen for 2 ovens.
Besides both these reasons, there are certain cooking methods which cannot be accomplished in a combo oven. For instance, putting 2 trays is really difficult, almost impossible. If you need to create steam and wish to place an additional dish for it, there's no space. There's hardly any space for an oven thermometer in case you want to use one. Since there is a glass plate at the bottom, you can't use a pizza stone or cast iron plate if you wanted to.

Also, convection mode drives heat around the oven using fans. While this increases the efficiency somewhat, it tends to dry out and burn the surface of the food more easily. You'll find it hard to achieve the same results in a convection oven as a regular oven because of this reason.

I don't have any brand recommendations since I haven't bought one. But look for the following features:
  • Temperature range - higher the better
  • Timer availability and length - at least 60 minutes is required, 90 would be better
  • Accessories provided
  • Convection mode, if available, would be useful as it's more efficient and can be used where you are cooking the dish covered.
I would say go to a store and take a look at the size. If the purpose is purely home cooking, 30-40 L should be good enough. Looking at the ovens will give you a better idea of the size.

I agree with @gourav on the baking point. Combo ovens aren't very well suited for it. These ovens can't handle an hour long cooking and also they don't get hot enough for some recipes where temp needs to be higher than 200. For something like chicken tandoor or pizza it takes twice as long. I use a kitchen thermometer and I have never seen actual temp reaching the number it says on the display.

So in short, OTG is the way to go, right?

I see OTG as a better alternative to these air fryers that are being pushed of late.

A microwave has its place too. In homes that have a regular oven.
