Forum Feedback Behavior of TE Members (Gyan Ahead, You have been warned!)

imho
community forums should have a private inquiries section
where a member / banned / disciple could communicate
with the staff. of course, staff may respond or not

thread permissions are made such that only thread starter
and privileged staff
have access to that thread. it is similar
to PM with multiple staff {not knowing who are staff}

Keeping in line with the intended purpose of this thread, member's behaviour.. I had a question to ask you all to seek your point of view. So here goes,

Do you consider a scam to only be a transaction where money has been lost/taken/held or would you also consider false information and lies and fake commitments prior to a deal to also be a scam?

Feel free to also comment with your thoughts but if you don't want to type, react with 'Sad' emoji if you think a scam is only if money is involved and 'Like' if you think a scam can also be if there have been numerous lies, ghosting and fake commitments (for weeks), prior to a deal not being held up by the seller.

Thanks and have a good night!

Could you be more specific about the falsehoods involved? Or use a hypothetical that illustrates the actions you're describing.

Would agree with this definition from @calvin1719 re the common sense understand of 'scam', but legal definitions of fraud do not require a direct theft of money.
Lies, ghosting, are bad faith and a hole behaviours, but imo scam implies monetary damages.
Basically someone can be unreliable without being a scammer, and can commit fraud without any currency being transacted. So for the purpose of a forum like this, which uses a kind of social trust system rather than a legal one, it is useful to know what kinds of behaviour you're dealing with to better judge.

Isn't that the standard bargaining technique every Indian is taught? "That shop is giving for less"..."I have only Rs. X, so reduce price", etc.

I have only Rs. X, so reduce price
This one is from the Olx school of bar.. er lowballing

I would have thought the latter would always be leading or resulting in the former.

Thanks for your replies and reactions, all. I am of the personal opinion that even the latter constitutes as a scam.

Citing defintion from Cambridge;

"a dishonest or illegal plan or activity, esp. one for making money" (yes, money is mentioned there, but it's not implying it's a must)

Additionally, don't we often say "Time is money"? So, if days (time) have been lost due to lies and deception it's money a d this doesn't sit right with me. I'm at an age where time has a high value to me.

The long story/context is below:

I was added to a WhatsApp group by the group admin after trading with him here on TE, this group has a number of members, some from TE too. In my initial few weeks/months I came across a guy who "seemed" super helpful and I thought to myself, "why don't we have this guy on TE, good chap". He was very active on the group, also on FB, writing long posts, I also found it odd why he's not joined TE despite many members referencing TE on the WA group, but did not think much of it.

Many months later the 'helpful guy' had a CPU up for sale and my friend was in the market for one. So I did not think twice about dealing with him since I 'had' a very good impression of him. He was a local too.

Without dragging this story longer, he basically strung me along for 2 weeks with lies, ghosting and misinformation. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt as he was credible and decent, I thought. He, at one point gave me an address (his employee's) to go pick up the CPU and a time slot too. Luckily,I Insisted on getting the person's number before going..which he never gave me. He eventually stopped replying to me. Admin was this guy's good friend and though he wasn't involved in the deception, seemed like he received more details than I did, after I informed him about the matter.

Realized then, it's good we don't have such guys here on TE. (Though he could be here and a lurker)

Everyone please stop ****ing around in the FS/Marketplace section. Someone price something "supposedly" higher than market value and everyone pounces on him like vultures wtf. You are well in your rights to point out an exorbitant pricing but that doesn't mean everyone have to put in their "2 paise." If there's any price lower online then just post the link with its offer/discount/season sale price. There's absolutely no need for everyone to go off. If you are frustrated in life I suggest you work out in your local gym instead or play some outdoor sports. That will be more productive for everyone including your own self. Or just laugh it off and move along. Gesus!

I think people piled up on that one person because the hardware that he upgraded to was purchased here at half of the market price.

Hypocrisy like that is usually very satisfying to point out.

Funnily in the past i've also noticed that no one points out the high pricing to old members.. but new members dare price something high and there thread will be 100% murdered.

It's because old members know how to respond or deal with it and would certainly ask mods to remove comments. New members are more likely to accept 'this is how it works here' and get peer-pressured. Another point is most old members all know each other and their buying selling patterns and know that their suggestions would not have any effect or will get a rude reply back. ;)

Gonna remember this for all future trades.

My personal experience has been extremely good since the day I joined this forum. Have found a ton of knowledge from the old threads and the people I have engaged in a convo have been super helpful. Even though I'm just 2 months old in this forum still never had older members talk me down or belittle any input given to me.
The trades brought me in touch with some nice folk who were more than happy to trust this new guy and gave me the benefit of the doubt.

Read the whole thread and I get that there are surely some bad apples in this basket but by God's grace I have not come in contact with any of them YET.

Thankfully, I have had a great experience here. I also strongly believe in the 95% people are good theory. Never felt cheated. All buy / sell deals were smooth. A few bad apples, but I tend to have a strong "person radar" and the way they word the DM is enough for me to politely say no and move on / ignore.
