Airtel Prepaid Unlimited 5G question.

Hello all,
So I usually recharge my fiber with the lowest plan since I never really use data much apart from youtube and general browsing. Then when I need to download a huge file, I use my mobile phone hotspot instead as 5g is fast.

I know that airtel doesn't offer unlimited 5g to all plans anymore, so I went with the Rs 3599 one year plan as it says "truly unlimited 5g". But I can barely use the internet after the daily 2GB is consumed.

Did I fall for airtel trickery? or is there something else I need to do? If anyone have had a similar issue and knows a solution, please let me know.

It seems 'truly unlimited' refers only to unlimited std calls and roaming.

But there is a daily limit specified for data.

I can see how this can be misleading. You think you can finish a years quota of data in less than a year.

Doesn't work like that. If you need more than 2GB, then they want you to topup. Check if there is a free 1GB top up otherwise you will have to pay for it.

Even in Airtel Postpaid UL is 330/360GB something on a number , after that FUP kicks in . JIO was actually UL when i used sometime back

I was having similar doubt about airtel's unlimited 5g.
I was trying to compare even the 349 and 379 monthly plans. On description it says unlimited 5g, but I've seen multiple complaints on twitter saying even 5g data is getting counted in daily quota. Don't know if it is common or a bug.
With jio it doesn't seem to happen.

So i called customer care last night and again today. They told me that I haven't consumed any of the 5G unlimited part of the plan yet and hints me that my area might not have 5G service yet. But I have been using their 5G since launch.

They also told me that they will highlight my issue and will be fixed asap but I doubt it.

I wonder what course of action I can take to resolve the issue. I am tempted to port my number to Jio but I have already recharged for 1 frikin year.

It honestly should be unlimited as even the plan says "Unlimited" in the top-up section in Airtel app.

I've observed that Airtel has always been cunning with their service and doesn't truly stand to their words. They always have these hidden t&c's or tricks to trouble the customer.
This is why I don't trust Airtel at all. Meanwhile I never faced any trouble with Jio, except that their network is slow (data) in a few areas I visit.

T & C's don't mention what 'G' is exempt.

Once 2GB is exceeded for the day. You either get a top up or stop.

So what they said is a) misleading b) wrong
But I have been using their 5G since launch.
I believe you.

Keep trying different avenues. I think you're sol but that's just me.

This is advertising abusing the language to mislead people. And its passed their lawyers because it turns out the unlimited part applies to calls only.

So you can't even get them for false advertising because they will day the terms are visible. Didn't you read them :grumpy:

Why did jio offer unlimited and that too for free because they wanted to poach customers and they ended up with over a 100 million a year after launch, seven years ago.

I don't know what the deal is with Jio these days but remember needing to recharge your phone every month to keep it active. Which was not the case with airtel back then. Recharge when whatever was over. Not by the clock. Though i see this has also become airtels way recently.

Oh well, look at the bar chart below. We're definitely doing something right.

The only other country with cheaper data is Israel. Considering the geographical size difference this is not bad for us.

Airtel's unlimited 5G is a scam or technically the 5G moniker shown on the phone is a scam.

5G icon with white background is true 5G, transparent background one isn't (likely 4G masquerading as 5G). Also if you are using it as a hotspot, it switches from true 5G to fake 5G is what I observed. I had to do the 50GB top up while travelling. Jio is a shitty company as well but their unlimited 5G works as intended when you are getting 5G.

Observe the below pic..

For both the plans it is mentioned as Unlimited 5g in the list, but the headline says recharge for 379 and get unlimited 5g.
Again they mention "2gb/day 56gb", for the other one "2gb/day 2gb".
They made it as confusing as possible.

I remember reading this when it came out. More like a 4.5G than 5G. Which means when the equipment costs reduce we will get real 5G. That is provided we avoid Chinese stuff here which will be cheaper, 5G and a long term national security risk.

What if we just select something like, 5g always on?

Your phone won't work if there is no 5G and depending on the frequency 5G will be weaker than 4G. Not advisable if you need to be reachable.

Street vendors get the best mobile data speeds in the country

Airtel will take 3-4 years to move to standalone 5G, so it will take a long time for them to fully utilise the bandwidth and focus will still be on 4G.

It seems there is no specific page for t&c for each recharge, but found this page which talks about all recharges.

I found something interesting here...
  • It is clarified and stated that these offers are only meant for personal and non-commercial use, and is not intended for any commercial use, or special or enterprise plans. Airtel reserves the right to end/ suspend/modify the Offer/services in specific cases of commercial use, or any fraudulent use.
  • Commercial usage is considered where data usage is beyond 300 GB in 30 days.
So does it mean, "unlimited 5g" no longer applies once u cross 300gb within 30 days, irrespective of ur recharge plan?

Understandable. But when someone needs only 5g for a short time, like OP said, to download something faster, this 5g always on should work to get the unlimited 5g data right?

I thought they are competing with jio, didn't know the fight is still on with bsnl..

There is. See below how to access it.

It's the same deal.

Only thing 'unlimited' is calls :bored:

Now I understand why 5G is so expensive abroad.

Early adopters absorb the cost making tech more affordable for the rest.

I have seen that in the app but it crashes too quickly. When you select the "Terms & conditions" blue text below, it goes to the page I have mentioned previously.

Too bad and sad we don't have many alternatives except jio. I tried bsnl and it is still in 2g "edge" era sometimes.

If I understand it correctly, the "Unlimited" part of the data plan comes as a reward instead like free Amazon prime.

While technically right this is not applicable to this discussion.

5G is what Airtel says it is. And if you see 5G in the status bar then I would argue that is what Airtel is offering NOW and more importantly what they mean by 5G.

Not in the future.

Not unlimited but you might find a freebie 1GB data top up from time to time.

I'm not against Airtel for doing this because I'd rather get mobile data than none at all due to congestion.

4G was supposed to do much better with congestion than 3G and same applies to 5G.

By waiting for new tech to get cheaper at least we don't get those initial costs passed onto us.
I have seen that in the app but it crashes too quickly.
No problems with latest Airtel app on A14

Try clear cache and if that doesn't work. Uninstall and reinstall it.

What does it even mean buddy?

Maybe they have a different meaning for 5g...maybe like, 5th generation of 4g or 3g.

Not using Samsung A14. On ios it often crashes, has been crashing so for a very long time.

Not reasonable unless there are areas in India where 5G shows in the status bar with a solid white background.

Who has seen that with Airtel so far?

Then use their website (if i click that link it opens the app. So disable it if you can)

Enter your number and you should see their plans.

Why do you use their app if its buggy? I guess the recharge part works just fine. Typical...
