That's strange, I also have a diy pre and power amps, I find it much more articulate and bass has more control. I definitely wouldn't call it lean. I have a pass b1 buffer, volume control is a relay/resistor ladder and power amps are ljm l15d, I'm a class D convert!

The boss dac is excellent, the boss2 which I have now is even better, actually as good as you'll ever need IMHO.

I use either a microfibre towel or the ones from specs cases, my preference is the latter.
