Any interest in Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR for 2k

i would just be using this one AP, it requires PoE hence i am looking at my options, i dont think i need a crazy setup as the usage of internet is very casual (for family)

since i only need to power this one AP, can i not provide 12v supply from this one cable and use the other end of ethernet directly to the AP.

am asking this because buying a whole PoE switch for this one device would be too much, neither do i require one, and buying adapters for them which costs 1k+ is stupid imo.

getting a unifi AP would be nice, hence trying to put some efforts.

edit:- okay well

This looks like the cheapest way to power one device:

You can take it apart, solder two wires, and power it with 5V but it’s kind of tricky. There are repair videos on YouTube that show you where to make the connections.

nvm brother, i think ill go with a switch, i found one cheap make in india one on amazon, has very good reviews, here

That’s a 100mbit switch with gigabit uplink. If you’re fine with that there’s cheaper TP-Link models as well.

But the signs are the pretty clear. The universe is calling upon you to set up a homelab. You’re destined for great things, and a gigabit poe switch will take you there.

My 2 cents , buy decent and good quality equipment as your device will run 24x7 on it. Don’t skimp on it. Also it’s a one time cost. I would not put my money on these kinds of switches . Buy from a reputable brand . The AC LR has specific power requirements, the cost at which these are being sold, not sure whats the quality of components used. Also as @rsaeon said at least have a gigabit POE switch. The device has been tested and shared by many can easily handle upto 300 Mbps + speeds. So by going for 100Mbps local switch you are already limiting your bandwidth.

Because the equipment you bought is at a cheaper rate , provide it quality power. At least buy a decent POE switch that is within your budget . Rest i leave upto you. In the longer run using non standard and low quality equipment leads to challenges and may affect the life span of the AP. So take a call keeping all those things in mind .

@kuduku Also has POE adaptor with him for sale. Ping him to get a good deal and he has tested the same with these units. That would be the ideal option , in case you are really tight on budget.

POE adapter both sold, members have committed. Will take payment once i send pics of AP

yeah am pretty confused, for starters, i am not gonna be living here, am moving abroad, and i refrain to go hardcore simply because its not required, if i were to live here, the scenario would have been else

i have a three storey house, i have hard wired each floor with ethernet, the ground floor has one router as an access point. on first floor i have my room where i have my isp given router doing everything, and i have two other rooms,

for both of the routers, i have same ssid and encryption for 2.4 and 5ghz but they arent as good as mesh, so for seamless connection i lowered the transmission power on each wlan.

because of this the other two rooms weren’t getting enough bandwidth or signal. now i as a person am very interested in experiencing unifi equipment, was planning to invest in second hand hardware for myself when i’ll move abroad, but i thought MAYBE getting this would benefit the network here. i do have a mini-pc server which ill be keeping here.

i tried increasing the power of wlans, and surprisingly it is working well. but i still think implementing this ap would be nice : )

and i think you guys are right, better equipment would be nice, but my budget may not allow that. i opted for 100M because without me, a 100mbps connection is plenty for here, and thought would do just fine. but yeah maybe ill invest in tplink much rather.

i am confused because, this upgrade is really not necessary, but i still feel i should. it would be 4k ish to do this. not sure if it’s worth it. opinions are welcome, help me decide guys.

That’s perfectly fine.

I started my current homelab with the cheapest new Mikrotik router, it was around 2k and I played around with it for a year before getting a higher end device.

And all of my APs were 100mbit for the last 7 or 8 years before I upgraded to these Unifi devices.

This is probably the lowest you can go with at 2.2k for a decent quality 100mbit poe switch:

You can save 250 with this newer model, it has a lower total power budget which shouldn’t matter for a single AP:

If you move abroad , you would be able to sell the AC LR at similar price you got for injectors you may not get the same price but you can club it and sell with the AC LR at a slightly lower cost.

I am in a similar boat like you. I have an Airtel 100 Mbps connection in bridge mode and I was using Linksys Mx 4200 / 4300 via wired backhaul in my house on 2 floors. I sold all my Linksys units off and currently using . AC LR and AC Pro with managed Gigabit switch at home managed using Unifi software on my PC.

Also have a backup Jio 10 Mbps connection broadband with IPTV connection running on another AC LR in a corner of my house. Which works great for IPTV and backup in case Airtel goes down.

for my home here, i think this basic 100M switch would do for now, ill upgrade down the line if its required.

when am abroad, am planning to buy UCG fiber, some good poe switches of unifi along with wifi 6 AP, it’s like ill spend there when i earn more loll. for this india home where my parents will live i think this much is plenty enough.
