Damn, not a good day for SSDs. Consumer market will shrink even more and more cartel-like behaviour will follow.
nothing good was coming from micron from a long time. indeed this is best.
But more competition is always better for the market. This shows that AI bubble is a news hype rather than reality and we wont see prices coming down in near future too ![]()
The following comment from Reddit speculates as to what this might mean for common consumers:
There goes 99% of the laptop memory upgrade market. Now everyone will have to dig through scraps to try to find something that will work, since Crucial was the only one who would include all intermediate JEDEC profiles on their kits, which, for example, would allow a 3200 kit to run at 2933, 2666, 2400, etc. Now it’s back to the wild west days where you have no idea what profiles are included and will probably have to find the exact speed your system uses rather than a “universal” SO-DIMM that can work regardless of the speed bin required by the system.
Hope some chinese company fills the void and gets us better and cheaper ram.
Sad to hear the SSDs are going away too, now if you want cheap entry level ssds you have to go for WDGreen crap.
CXMT is a chinese brand which has already started producing ddr5 chips thought not at hynix Samsung scale.
Yeah, I read that too.
China to take over from S Korea?
