Experience with Flip folding screen phones?

Hey, anyone using a Flip phone like the Galaxy Z7 Flip, Moto Razr 60 or something else?

Talking about Flips strictly, which I define as 4 inch square-ish or some form factor when closed, and 6 inch or more in 21:9 or taller aspect ratios. I like Flips more since they’re more pocketable, and I really don’t have a big use case for a really huge screen on a phone (I have my laptop, desktop etc for that lol).

I am considering Flip as my next phone in a few years, but wanted to know if anyone has experience with them, good or bad.

On that note, a recent Honor flip phone looks amazing spec-wise: Honor Magic V Flip 2 - Full phone specifications

I wish someday Pixel would make a Flip too. For some reason, I’m kinda thinking their Flip would be really amazing. But, they’re likely not going to enter this market. Oh well.

I think the highest IP rating for a flip phone until now is IP48. With dust or sand getting stuck in the hinge, you are bound to break the screen. No one even offers extended warranty like they do on regular phones, such is their estimation of durability of this device.

Unless you have money to burn, would probably try an older generation Samsung or Motorola first by picking one up during the sales. However, you probably might not get couple of years out of it and no one in their right mind would purchase a 2-year old used one, so there isn’t any resale value either.

The phone I linked has IP58. Google’s latest Fold reached IP68, and I’m hoping Flip will reach the same ballpark soon, which is why I said:

Dust or sand in the hinge doesn’t automatically mean your screen is going to break, though. I’ve seen some foldables, some that are really dusty too. If there’s too much dust, the hinge starts making noises probably due to the larger sand particles rubbing here and there. But yeah, fair point.

As for resale value, I almost never sell my phones, I prefer using them to their grave lol

But yeah, I’m looking for experience from someone who has used them because I don’t want to buy ewaste that gets turned into ewaste in a few months :stuck_out_tongue:

Buying an older gen sounds good in theory (razr 50+ costs 60K iirc?), but every generation right now brings worthwhile upgrades (IP protection, better hinges etc), so that would not be very wise imo.

All in all, thank you. They’re fair points, but I already considered them, and so, I’m looking for someone with real hands-on experience with them. All of my friends who have foldables have the Fold, no one has a Flip :frowning:

Fair enough, I was tempted to get a Flip multiple times in the past and convinced myself not to due to durability concerns.

It was backed by 2 people in my workplace who had the phones fail between 1-2 years.

From online comments, I have seen some people get multiple years out of it without caring for it much and others having it break after putting it in a case and using both hands to flip open. Just the nature of this thing.

My brother bought Samsung Z Flip6 last year, he likes it very much, Good lock module lets you use any app on the outer screen. The only negative point is that the screen protector comes out every few months.

Thank you for sharing! This is confidence inspiring

The Samsung installed one or a 3rd party one?

IIRC, the Samsung one uses rubber and some polymer compound that lets you have a little bit of self-healing?

If it’s the Samsung installed one:

  1. Does Samsung install it again for free if it comes out every few months?
  2. Where does it come out from? The edges or the part where the screen folds?
  3. Has this been the case from the start, or it started after a few months of owning?

Samsung installed one, One free replacement is the rule. It comes out/ damaged in the middle of the screen where it bends. In fact the third party one is holding better than Samsung one.
