Anyone planning for this - it will be EOL in 2 years (OS) and 3 years for (security) updates.
But it’s one of the very few tablets with oled display and fingerprint sensor available here.
I have tab s9 ultra and xiaomi pad 6! I cannot make out the difference in screen when watching movies! So, no real need for OLED in tabs in my opinion..
I’ve always wanted a tab with an AMOLED display, since I’m used to them in phones by now. I have the Mi Pad 5, and a relative has a Mi Pad 6 that I’ve used.
Watching shows/movies at night in a dark room, for me, it’s always easy to realise that I’m using a non-OLED display, especially when dark scenes appear (Or when the aspect ratio is such that there are black bars) and the blacks look visibly grey and “glow”. So I find it a bit hard to believe that you can’t make out a difference, unless you’ve been using it during the day or in a brighter environment than the one I mentioned.
The IPS panels in most tablets have very poor contrast, so I would be surprised if someone doesn’t see a difference, especially when watching HDR content.
When I used a tablet, the lack of biometrics and also GPS when using it outdoors made the use case for Mi and OnePlus tablets very limited considering what you pay for them.
But yes, it is also a bad idea to purchase a Samsung tablet that has its support ending in a couple of years or so as I had encountered that with the S7 Plus and decided to not purchase tablets late into the life cycle anymore.
Any particular reason? I’m unsure if there will be any critical issues if the tablet is solely meant as a media device with typical OTT apps from the Play Store. Do let me know if there are any specific concerns you came across or experienced.
The later OS versions were simply not good and caused the tablet to be laggy. With bootloader version lock, you cannot downgrade too far. You are basically stuck with a suboptimal experience in the end, especially if there are bugs. Guess that is how support generally is towards the end with no optimisation.
The other part of course is if you care about security updates, which most don’t. I had also tried GSI but those had too many bugs.
I was eyeing for this, but support will end within 2 years. And s10 are in higher price range. Maybe I’ll wait ![]()
I dont wanted to open new thread for asking this but related to the discussion here.
Is having no security update that big an issue?
I am using S4 tab . I think it is easily 6 years old . I dont see any problem. Netflix and Prime still plays very smoothly and looks beautiful.
All apps work smoothly.(youtube, gaia, google earth etc)
Where is the problem if security updates stop coming? I fail to understand.
Because App supports on these tabs will keep going for a long time. 7-8 years. They are pretty powerful these days. If people are managing to edit 4k videos on there tabs.
That’s also true. But if you’re in ecosystem then future software upgrade makes sense IMO.
Your device gets vulnerable to attacks. There are loads of security vulnerabilities found in software every day, companies prioritize and fix the critical ones, then push the updated version to devices. If you use very few authentic apps then you’re good.
yes. i only use apps like Youtube, Google, Kindle , gaia ,gopro etc.
Just this month, Google fixed two 0-day vulnerabilities and 120 security flaws. If you follow it, they fix 40-50 security flaws every month.
For media consumption it might be okay, but I am not sure how people feel comfortable accessing financial data on a vulnerable device. I think most go by “won’t happen to me because of what I do on the device”, but the risk is real.
Not an really a big issue from media only perspective - since that’s what you want it for.
But, with longevity in mind, its better to give more updates. Looking at Apple, they have a much longer period. With the S10 tabs they are giving 7 years support, they can do that for this as well
It depends.
If there is a bug and it can be misused or chained, then its an issue. If you do not access any financial or company data on it - you are at far lesser risk, but for many, a tablet is usually signed in to the same accounts.
Finally - cyber insurance. If found using EOL device/software, they may straight up deny coverage. Or if there is an issue - payouts might be reduced or cancelled. This is true for corporates, but when it might trickle to individuals getting scammed - never know.
Frankly, SD8G2 on the TabS9 is a very powerful & good processor and should get 7y updates. Samsung has made the change with S10 series, but did not extended the same to S9 series.
Bhai…you guys have put some fear in me now with regards to using out of security updates tablets.
I do open my banking page and all.
Nothing more that thought.
Chill dude. Half the people on TE are using comet with possibly active sessions on bank websites. With how easy it is to convince the browser to drain your bank accounts; your turn will come much later, if ever.
There is theory & then there is practical situation. An android device running default manufacturer rom with no root & locked bootloader & not installing APKs is pretty much safe to use here in India. I am not saying such a device is 100% safe to use but if your luck is that bad then statistically speaking you have more chances of getting into an accident on a road/path you take daily & nobody can give guarantee about your luck.
OTPs are must for every domestic txn & disputing international txns done without OTP while your are still in India is very easy. Also, nobody is doing forensic analysis of phone for typical online frauds not to mention there is no cyber insurance policy in India anyway which help ppl where fraud is done on a domestic txn requiring OTP (you can read T&C of such insurance policies).
