Why Indians Pay so much for electricity?

She explains so well each and every part of the bill and why we are charged so much.\

Please note–This is not exactly a comparision with rest of the world.

Each Nation has its own system of generating Electricity .

In Himachal we get 300 Units free after which we pay.
Himachal Is Electricity Surplus state btw.

But reason to share this video separately is ..I found it will help everyone to understand the issue well.

Basically even Power Theft is being charged by Govt. On people. This part I just cannot understand . How can they put their failure to stop thefts on People who are paying honestly for their bills. Plus 3 taxes on one bill.

But like they say in India honest people suffer most.

This is nothing new and it also happens in the USA. Problem here is mobilizing the masses. For every 1 person who will raise a voice against this there will be 100 naysayers - some will just be regime bootlickers (the temples over roads/electricity/hospitals/schools crowd) while others will just be blackpill doomers (“whatever can we do, it’s just the way it is”).

Absolutely horrible country to get anything of value done.

Just like how taxpayers pay enough to cover the taxes not paid by others?

Socialist republic moment, haha.

Nooooo I gotta cover for Adani’s share, one day he’ll notice me

USA also has power thefts ?

Manifests differently than in India but yes. Or at least I consider it to be power theft. The enormous energy costs for industries (most recently AI data centers) are “subsidized” by passing it on to the local residents in places near where the data centre is located. People have been seeing rising electricity bills even when significantly reducing usage. In my books this is just institutionalized power theft but idk that’s just me.

State electricity boards employs lot of govt. staff with hefty salary, pensions and facilities. Moreover, they tend to be very corrupt. Common man have to pay for all this.

I wouldn’t mind paying more for electricity.

If only corruption didn’t:

Make you pay for cable from pole to main meter.
Pay for faster main meter replacement if it burns down.
Faking signatures of meter owner and taking meter away on pretext of stealing electricity.
Over Due charges when electricity bill online itself gets updated after due date passes.
Burying underground cables through your empty plot without any notification, then threatening to press charges after your JCB rips them lol.
Foreman asking for money to fix loose wires from pole to main meter every damn time.
Foreman closing complaints for several days saying issue has been fixed.

I have 30+ electricity meters. Life is hell

But you’d have to pay for all of that regardless of country.

I’ve learned that:

Online complaints through app are actioned more diligently than in-person or phone complaints.

You’re responsible for your own supply, from pole to meter and beyond. Any meter fault or burning or irregularities is also your (cost) responsibility.

Pole wiring issues are fixed only on an emergency basis, if it’s something that’s unique to you then you’re expected to pay extra to the lineman. Otherwise go put in a work order through the local office. You’re paying the lineman extra for quicker service and without the hassle of filing a request at the local office.

These are the only outright corrupt practices:

Standard meter replacement is 7 days in my city, you can pay extra as a favor/bribe to get it done in 1 day.

The rest is laid out in the notices issued by your local discom or electricity board.

The exact same regulations apply to water supply.

See this is what I mean by what it is and we’ve come to learn.

This is explicitly clarified in DHBVN Sales Circular / Instruction No. Ch-178/SE/Comml (dated 26.12.2023) and reinforced in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 2025.
“Individual service cable of maximum length of 30 meters from terminal pole to the premises of the consumer shall be provided at Nigam’s [DHBVN’s] cost and beyond 30 meter, cost of cable shall be recovered from consumer.”

^ They don’t care about the length and you always have to pay.

Same law mentios: Regulation 3.1 - Duty of Licensee:
The code mandates the licensee (DHBVN) to maintain the quality of supply and safety of the equipment (lines) up to the consumer’s meter.

And the one thing you mentioned being corrupt is actually our fault.
They can bury anything wherever they want, through anyone’s land without informing owner.

It is actually our responsibility to ask them if we can dig and there are no wires there.

TIL different electricity boards have different regulations, wow.

Second point in this partial screenshot of my area’s guidelines:

This one is easier.

The state government needs to authorize the electricity board under section 164 of the 2003 electricity act to be able to dig up your property.

If they don’t, then the electricity board needs your permission.

In both cases, you’re entitled to some form of compensation.

Talk about a misleading thumbnail/title. God bless AI, as I can skip the entire video to get a quick summary within a few seconds.

For those who don’t wanna watch the video, she’s proposing that you install solar on rooftop, which is not exactly a secret. But make sure to research local videos near you, as they often talk about what govt subsidies are available, how much you actually generate in your local climate and what the real world costs/timelines look like.
