Hey

I was just planning on downloading a 1080p movie to watch on this friend's 42" (or 50" ?) rear projection tv. Has anyone here done that? As in downloaded one and seen? Because there are very few 1080p movies available and have a HUGE difference in size. So wanted to know which to try or so..

Are you sure the 42" or 50" rear projection TV is 1080p compatible? Whats the model no. ? If its CRT projection then it will probably be 1080i and if its LCD projection then most probably it will be 720P.

Its a CRT projection and i just checked up that it'l be 1080i/720p compatible. He's mostly getting a LCD/Plasma soon though..

^ Yeah, only the latest LCD's and most plasma's are 1080p ready.

But personally I have checked a 1080p and 1080i movie via HDMI on a Pioneer plasma and it looked more like hype, of course HD telecast would be another story altogether

ank1t, sorry to go OT here...

Just saw this thread. I bought a 32" SS bordeaux recently. Does 1080i not p. Downloaded Kingdom of heaven (15.xx GB) 1080p. Now my TV's in Jabalpur movies in mumbai :P They'll meet in like May. Will the movie work? What sort of quality can I expect? This is the first cinemascope 1080p movie I've got my hands on (elephants dream was the first but that's anim).

^^Theres a huge diff between 1080i and 1080p from what I've heard.

Many people say they prefer 720p to 1080i.

Never the less 1080i is a far cry from regular DVDs.

Yeah that's bascially since all HD-ready sets have atleast a vertical resolution of 1280x720 pixels.

Hence they can natively do 720p, while 1080i is basically upscaling of pixels which looks crap (if I got the term right ;)).

1080p should only be watch on displays with a resolution of 1980x1080 (if i got that right) which is bascially found on 42" Plasma's and LCD's

^Pretty much all the plasmas at 42" locally available are at 1024*768 (Panasonic TH42PX/PV60). LCDs - 32" and 37" are mostly 1366*768 which is a perfect match for the 1280*720 resolution of 720p sources.

Thing is, 1080i = 1920*1080 interlaced, and 1080p = 1920*1080 progressively scanned. Therefore, vandal, your Samsung can take a max 1080i signal as input, and downscale it to it's native resolution, i.e. 1366*768.

The newer Aquos and Samsung 40" and above panels are full HD, i.e. able to display 1920*1080 progscan signals in their full glory without any up/down-scaling.

Personally, I find it hard to see the difference between 1080p and 720p on a screen <40" in size. Only when you start going above 40" does the difference between a 720p and 1080p signal become visible..
