currently i am using local internet cable which directly goes into the lan port of my pc. now in my building, tata indicom also provides net through that same line. so i would like to know is it possible to use both the connections through same cable? i wanted to use the local cable for my desktop and wanted to configure the tata indicom on my router. i asked the net guy and he said its possible, i needed to buy a switch. can anyone shed some info on this matter regarding whats a switch and is it possible through that? my last option would be to buy another cat5 cable and use the tata connection through that but cabling would be a lot of pain.

could not get what are you getting at... If you wnat to use both Internet connections on the same PC... then here it goes ... you need an extra Lan Card.. configure one connection at one NIC and other at other... no need of switch....:cool2:
Here it gets intresting... you cannot combine the bandwith of both the connections ...like Mtnl @2Mbps and tata at 2Mbps... both together at 4Mbps....:hap2: ...It down't work like this.. you can use it as backup if one is down switch to another if you need it for important things like day trading or Virtual Lan...
On a positive note found some text on net for Network Load balancer.. that can indeed combine the two bandwidths... Not the Hardwired Network load balancer like DLink. linksys... they will just provide a backup system so that if one is down they switch to other to provide you high availability internet connectivity... but a custom router based , load balancer installation of linux on old machine that can indeed provide you with combined bandwith... that too not for single application... but multiple applications together using upto combined bandwiths....
Never had a chance to set it up... first there was no old machine then..the other connection eventually expired...
you can google it an set it up ... that will be a nice project..

Router is provided by Tata. Buy a switch (switch 2).
Hook up building network cable from "switch 1" to "switch 2"
Tata Router to "switch 2"
attach cable from "switch 2" to desktop.
You need to assign 2 different ip addresses to you lan card. If u want to access the net through either connection just use "route" command or "Network Connections" to change the default gateway and you will be able to access internet through either network.
One other option is to directly connect Tata Router to "Switch 1" and local building cable will remain attached to your desktop.
PPPoE Dialup method wont work through this method. If it's a dialup you need to dial through the router itself...
Edit: This is insecure since other people on the switch can access net if they knew the router's ip unless a VPN is setup between router and desktop
