how about an android powered stick? will have one USB port, you can connect usb hard disk via a powered hub. Can connect directly to your TV on HDMI port. Will support both torrents and FTP transfers. Will have Wifi for connectivity.

Thats coz of hardware limitations. The hardware is not meant for high speed transfers. YMMV.

Samba? I don't get good speeds over vsftpd, using GoFlexNet

Yep. Dunno about FTP - have disabled it. AM on stock firmware - not ALARM/Debian
