As the title says, am not able to use 6 gb of ram.

The properties tells me 6gb installed (4 gb usable) on windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition

On windows xp i get 3.5gb which is understandable since its 32 bit OS

Please let me know what can be done

My motherboard is X58A-UD7 gigabyte

Also I have a graphic card 1gb , but shows as 2748gb

The shared resource is 1.7gb

Please help urgent

Your remaining 2 gb is shared in video ram thats why your gpu ram is shown as 2748.

You can correct the same from bios.

Disable onboard video manually and any shared memory options from bios. Though when a gfx card is plugged in it should auto disable the onboard video and the shared ram but its best tp do o manually.

nritech, then shouldnt my properties show full 6 gb usable ??

And I dont see any setting to diable the shared memory option on x58A-UD7 , since it has no onboard display

Also soyab0007, mainly use 64bit for more faster processing and the use of ram more than 4 gb

If you are not on sli then is your gfx card plugged in 16x or 8x pci exp. slot? Coz pci8x slot has a sharing bandwidth and not individual one as like pci 16x.

here

http://forum.giga-by...ge;topic=7355.0 refer to this term:

SLI Display drivers:

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT x 2

Manufacturer: NVIDIA

Chip type: GeForce 9800 GT

DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC

Display Memory: 3816 MB

Dedicated Memory: 1001 MB

Shared Memory: 2815 MB

Current Mode: 1280 x 960 (32 bit) (60Hz)

My gfx card is placed in the first PCI slot, the 16x one.

And let me summarise again

1) The properties of my computer show 6gb installed (4 gb usable) - now this is supposed to be wrong right ??

Even if the shared memory taken by gfx card is 2 gb, The properties should show 6 gb usable right?

2) The gfx card is 1 gb, but it is showing a total of approx 2.7gb - where is the extra ram coming from ???

3) A lot of posts are present with respect to above 6gb but usable 4 gb issues, most saying cpu pins may be bent, or some settings in bios, but what I would like to know is, will socket bent pin cause above issue.

Also now in addition, I put my megahalems on the cpu, and the temperatures are goin high!!

it touches 75+ and rising more during Prime torture test.

Even the IOH heatsink that come specially with my motherboard is super heating, making everything heat up

What could be the issue.

I have applied thermal paste the way it should be added, like i did in my previous system

also Nritech thanks for your interest in resolving my issue

This internal sharing issue is common is often been rectified via bios itself as theres no work around for it via windows. Have you tried upgrading to the latest bios?

I would prefer shooting a mail to gigabyte in that respect and explaining them the issue. They will surely help you out.

But my first advice is to dig deep into bios settings. Still post your bios manufacturer (amibios or award) and its version i will try to obtain its screenshots from somewhere is possible.

wont be able to post right now, will do it when I reach home.

Btw the manual has the screeshots , the link is posted above

Post a screenshot of cpu-z. It should show full 6gbram.

Also refer to the following links. They have sm bios settings to look out for though on a diff gigabyte mobo n sm other mobos.

Also your rig says 2gb ddr2 ram. but if you have 6gb then try it in diff slots. Queries have shown a faulty mobo and also faulty ram slots and last but final option is that one of the ram sticks might have gone kaput too.

Thanks for the links....i am actually frustrated with the setup....

eventually I may just sell off the board.

I dont even know what to tell the service center guys to get rma done

Let see I may experiment a little..

Same thing happened with me, I had 8GB RAM installed it showed only 6GB usable, though before it used to show complete 8GB usable even though 2GB RAM was shared with my GC card.

This is a issue with ur memory sticks, try replacing the slots or interchange the RAM, if that doesnt work check which memory stick is at fault.

I have been reading around the last few days about the shared system memory for graphics. I have 16GB ram installed and under available memory it shows 16GB usable but under graphics it says dedicated memory 1gb shared memory 8gb.

However task manager shows about 14gb ram free meaning this 8gb is not completely locked. From what I read it will only start being used once the 1gb dedicated memory is completely used up by Aero etc.

So OP I think your problem with the ram lies elsewhere, there is something at a HW level holding up the 2GB. Sorry I know its not very helpful!

Try checking gigabyte forums or emailing tech support.

^^ that was helpful

Atleast now am sure there is something wrong with CPu socket pins or bios or Heatsink pressure.

Will check and update..

I use 3 slots for triple channel (Obviously) but the second slot did not allow the system to boot with a single ram

Hence i suspect ram slot issue, at the same time, I check the cpu socket and found few bent pins.

I will surely have to rma the board, but what I want to know is will it be covered under warranty.

Not the board is from techshop.in, so now do i take the board to them or the service center, both being equidistant.

Which will be better in terms of speed of replacement and minimum hassels.

few days back i had same problem , 4GB was usable out of 6GB , but it was not being kept by graphics card , the ram stick had some issue , i booted system with one out of 3 sticks and it was not booting , so removed that and then it was fine , after 2 days i put the stick back and it started working again and shows 6GB complete now . so u could try putting one stick at a time and check if theres any issue ..
