8 Mbps From Airtel

[quote name='rshri']Guys are you not getting this?

Airtel's strategy is now to steer clear of heavy downloaders like us. They are now targeting casual surfers/chatters who want high speed access for short durations like while doing video conferencing or watching online videos.QUOTE]

For all their needs 2Mbps connection is more more more than enough

can you explain how a system can crash with a slow internet connection:eek:hyeah:

You misunderstand 0 The System crash is not due to slow internet, I am talking about recovery post a crash, which is directly dependent on Internet speed - The faster the net, the faster the recovery.

But do they know or care? They will gladly hand over 2k for 8Mbps. Believe me on this, I hang out with people like them. With most of them, internet bills are reimbursed by their companies. So they go for fattest connection they can get. So in the end, everyone is happy (including Airtel)!

Can someone edit this thread's title and remove the thirty two thousand exclamation points?

please?

Sites like YouTube/MSN are designed for 4-5Mbit connections. so while 2Mbit isn't really enough, it's sufficient. but it's not enough. In any case, 2k for 7-8GBs is beyond retarded. I'd rather have 256kbits unlimited than a 8Mbit connection with 8GB cap. assuming you download at the maximum speed of 1MBps, you can clear that cap in about 4 Hours If I am not mistaking.... not sure why Airtel thinks they are the second coming of christ, what's the point of offering 8Mbit ADSL when it comes with a 8GB cap? Hell, why not upgrade your current Infrastructure and offer 1Mbit uncapped for the masses instead?

Because this is not where easy money is available! Its all about maximizing company profits with smallest investments, buddy!

1 of the site admins should take some initiative n mail them about UL plans or atleast price revisions.. :S

And why do u think Airtel will care a damn about this mail (if they get it)?

Guys, please excuse my past few pessimistic posts! I am just hurt and angry that Airtel has slashed my broadband speeds.

I appreciate the fact that many of you are so positive about new technological developments and are able to envision light at the end of tunnel. I wish I was more like you!

Exiting this thread now... Thanks for your replies!

Heh, you think companies give a shit about what consumers think or want? all they see is cash. let's face it, I am desperate, you are desperate, everybody is desperate. we'll grab whatever we can and live with it. do you think we have a choice? companies know this, they don't really give a damn. they know, In the end of the day, this offer will attract customers and bring more revenues. that's all that matters. If you think TE's admin mailing them would make a flick of difference, you're sadly mistaking. look at India Broadband forum, the Admin of that Forum is basically running in circles trying to get a point across, even he knows he's at the losing end of the argument.

also, can someone please remove atleast 4-5 exclamation points? sigh!

This is a PR exercise. Airtel has been stagnant for a long time now, the impetus and leadership that Airtel always gives to any sector it enters has been conspicuously absent in broadband.

BSNL is a government org and even they have more imaginative plans. TATA mobile and broadband have always suffered from very bad management but even they are up and about making noise about 2mb.

Maybe there is pressure from management to ramp up visibility. They have been too low profile with few changes. The status quo suits them for the time being. But as we have seen in other sectors if you don't give leadership someone else will. Hopefully we will get that. From a consumer's perspective this plan makes little sense. Browsers don't need more speed and downloaders will not respond to a 8MB cap.

Is there a room for an economy class 10 MBPS connection in India? Or even unlimited 2 MBPS? I dont think so. This is no market strategy but plain common sense. How many people are using broadband today in ratio with Indias total population? Not even close to 1%. So whats the damn use in investing so much $$ in setting all that high speed stuff/marketing etc. In reality, how many people are using more than 80 GB of HDD in india??

People in business are not fools who would do anything the 1% india says, that would be suicide.

This is India, every market first needs to mature itself here. And broadband market is still pretty much in the middle !! By the end of 2008, we can hope to have 2 MBPS unlimited at low rates.

100 GB is ok for 1000/- 512kbps.

I download abt 50 GB a month on 256 kbps.

why would u want a 512kbps connection with a 100gb limit :S.. thats as good as unlimited!

i think hacker's point was that the limits should be a much saner amount. 1mbps - 50/100gb , 2mbps 100-200gb , 8mbps-500gb ..maybe makes sense.

I have no problems with caps. I pay 250 bucks for 1 GB 2 MBps connection. I have never exceeded the 1 GB limit EVER ( but i use at least 950 - 990 MB). True I cant download movies and such. But I do download a couple of songs every month and that is all I need.

Is that true? I was under the impression these guys just paid a flat rate based on bandwidth (and not data usage) to whoever they lease the backbone connection from.

Putting data limits on end users might be a way of extracting more from the same amount of bandwidth though.

Actually most national and international bandwidth selling and buying happens on data usage.

For national peering its 50 Rs per Gb. For international bandwidth its much more.

Thatz why we need google, yahoo, msn n other data centers in india. So our data stays in our own country does not have to travel international pipes.

So when an Isp gets a 10 Tb plan at xx speeds from an international isp, they have to make sure that there data usage stays below 10 Tb, if there data usage was say 6 Tb then they make a loss, coz they paid for those extra 4 Tb which were not used, if there data usage goes above 10 Tb then they have to pay premium rates.

So now you know why high speed bandwidth is xpensive and y we have data limits. :)
