Graphic Cards 9800GT - Difference between 512MB and 1GB editions?

So I was wondering and thought I would ask the experts here. I was looking at Zotac 9800gt cards and found there is one 512mb ddr3 and another with 1gb ddr3 memory (this is also true for so many other cards). Now, what I ask is what will be the difference in graphical finesse when I play games if I buy the 512mb compared to the 1gb card? I don't really play games on very high resolutions, maybe all I've ventured so far with my present 9500gt is 1024X768. :)
 
You will notice diffrence in GTA4 and those games which demands more than 512MB.. I general, you hardly will notice performance boost at lower resolutions. 1GB might help you at higher resolutions, again depends on the game..:)

You will have more memory, for Graphics processing. some times if Graphics ram is low, system will share system memory for graphics. 1gb ddr3 will give you a dedicated RAM for your Graphics needs.

i hope more will be explained by others who have more knowledge about it soon..
 
You wont see any difference in graphics but some games are memory demanding like crysis and gta4 in which the 1gb version of 9800gt may be handy. But i would say you better go for the powercolor hd4850 512mb.

Aaah...nice. So, if I'm playing a game and it requires more than the 512mb graphic memory then the system RAM will be shared to fill in the need. I guess it would slow down the frame rates considerably then since the system RAM would also be busy processing while gaming?

You seem to have no idea about virtual memory, graphics memory & ram.

Please increase you knowledge about these topics before you share your expertise.

Do the OP the main difference would be some more performance at higher resolution. Also certain games like GTA4 like huge amounts of graphics memory but then again most of these games are badly coded. So take your pick.
Also if your spending close to 6k on 9800GT I'd suggest adding a few more bucks and getting a 4850.

Next time onwards, In such threads mention your configuration,resolution you'll game at and also what is your budget so we can suggest something.
 
If you want answer in one line: You can't justify buying a 9800GT 1GB DDR3 over 9800GT 512 DDR3, and especially not if you are going to play at a resolutions less than 1680X1050.

As some one said here, if you have money, get a better card like HD 4850 instead of wasting it in getting extra VRAM slapped on a card not ideal for gaming above the resolution of 1680X1050.

Extra 512mb memnory on 1GB card would be a waste, only go for 1Gb if u are playing @ 1080p and above and not a 9800gt at least a 4850/9800gtx+/GTS 250 1GB ddr3 for 1080p and above.

Else 9800gt 512mb is suffice..........but not enought for GTA4, Stalker, Crysis and similar games @ 1280 X 1024
 
ya try zotac 9800gt amp! ...with 512 ddr3..

I am using 22" lcd...played all types of games @1680x1050&very high settings
 
9800GT 512mb in enough as per ur requirement :)..no need to go for its 1GB version as in its cost u'll get an HD4850 which is better
 
memory is proportional to resolution and fps.....higher the resolution and fps goes more the memory is demanded by GPU.

and also 512mb is sufficient amount of memory for most resolutions. Basically more memory i.e. 1GB or above is required when GPU(mostly when overclocked) demands it to buffer the gained or increased frames of video....in high resolution settings. :)
 
basically we can say that on mainstream cards 512mb is enough cuz they are meant to play at mid resolutions but for high end cards, more memory will come into play..so in short only high end cards r capable of making use of high VRAM n 512mb is enough for mainstream cards..

n also now a days v have lots of cards from Nvidia & ATI in mainstream section with price difference of 0.5-1k, so in cost of 1GB version of any card u might get 512mb card of higher section(like in this case 9800GT 1GB will cost around 6.5k-7k n in that price u can buy HD4850 or even GTS250)..

keeping all this in mind a 512mb of mainstream card is vfm card rather then its 1gb version ..

Well that settles it actually, since I don't really plat at super high resolutions the 512mb should work good enough. The thing is the 512mb here in Kolkata is costing around 7.2k and the GTS 250 is 9k, so I'm wondering if I should that extra bit of cash to get the GTS 250 instead. Also, my motherboard is an Asus P5k-VM with 1 x PCI-E x16 slot, the GTS 250 works on a single slot rite??

Okay, thanks! I'll try and stretch the budget. The Palit GTS 250 (1gb) is Rs. 9048/- (including VAT).:)

Powercolor HD4870 512MB is @ 9k and will rape on GTS 250 1GB..:lol:

Hmmm.... any ideas where I can find the HD4870 (512mb) card in Kolkata? Also, will a Corsair VX 450W be enough to run a HD4870?
