Hmm...

The double speeds at night are working here for me. And the PPPoE settings are not that difficult to setup.

I'll try configuring the bridged mode in Ubuntu.

I have used the bridged mode earlier and i like it better than PPPoE but the problem is "running internet in Linux". Bridged mode has some issues in Linux...

so i'll try every trick to run it in Ubuntu, if it fails then i'll revert back to PPPoE.

To configure PPPoE, i think i need to select PPPoE in the router home page (192.168.1.1). Do i also need to modify anything else to run PPPoE mode in Windows XP? (like TCP/IP settings, IP address, DNS settings etc. in control panel)

No. You dont need to set up anything at all in windows to use your modem in bridged or PPPoE mode. All the settings are done in the router configuration page only.

The only difference is that when you put all the settings like IP, Gateway and DNS in the connection properties, the router connects a little bit faster to the gateway. Although the difference is not that huge that it makes much of a difference. In Vista though, I have seen that entering all these property settings connects atleast 5-10 secs faster. The reason is I think because as IPv6 is enabled for me, the system doesnt search for all the dns entries for both IPv4 and v6 and thus connects faster.

I think in addition to choosing PPPoE mode in the router page, one also needs to enable DHCP. In Bridged mode, DHCP can be disabled.

yep, me too....looks like their server crashed...

how do I kno this, well create a new dialer, put in any username and any password and connect, heck put in your username and a wrong password....it would still connect...

happened around 2 months ago for a full 2 days...dunno how long it'll last this time

i just spoke to airtel abt double speeds, they say they are slowly discontinuing this service all over delhi . no more double speeds for any one ... ehhhhh i thinhk this ways i will soon switch to some other provider may be even tata with true 512 kbps all day n night.

grrr.....damn it man, but I doubt it, see not only is your speed not doubling but I am sure it's capped to 25kBps, and in day you must be getting 32-33KBPS, so some a$$ who didn't kno squat answered u prolly, bash them with this query, y less speed capped at 25 in night and more in day

ahhh.....my frnd was getting 25kBps...

so this means a big bummer eh....Instead of fullfilling our dreams of 512UL we take a step down.....

Is any ISP listening, we need more fracking b/w at reasonable prices...

lolz... they are minting money as of now ehhh. sick people. i think some international players should enter in and then we will see all these people provide better at lesser !!

Hehe, i suggest you do your reserach on how *reliable* tata is before you switch. Word on the street is they use the usual cable wallahs to provide connectivity. This may or may not aply to you, if it does, your net connection will be down for half the month.

You will get 512kbs tho, just for as long as your line is up. :ohyeah:

there is a honeymoon period for a few months, so you can feel good and spread the good word, the headaches start after that

the ugly truth is no one is offering more than 256kbs (unlimited)(*reliably*)/month at an affordable price.:(

there maybe the odd private ISPs that do, but how reliable are they??..Personally i care more that the connection is always up..and Airtel for the past 2.5 yrs, i've been with them, has been stellar in this respect.

well tata landline (not the metro ethernet) is handled by themselves but the damn cable wallas cut their wires and thats the problem

and their CC sux, altho Airtel CC sux now a days too....so its kinda even

Interesting info there bout the cables, i would beleive it.

Airtel's CC, only called them for billing issues which happned once and they were happy to oblige. Oh yeah and once cos the modem died, that was over a yr ago. Point being the service has been so stable i never needed to call them at all otherwise. Contrast that to my previous ISP where it was a call daily.

i am referring to thier broadband service here *only*, i dont use thier mobile service.

Well yeah, but these days their service sux, half the ppl there dont kno what they are talking abt, half lie thru their asses, I mean they say that I can't get double speed with nigh top up, wtf I am getting it and I can show a screenie to prove it to them but no they are fixed on something so they are fixed on it...

Once had a billing issue, the fun part they call up the landline when I have given them the mobile no., they say that their first priorty is the landline no. (go figure) so when I say ok if I didnt pick up the landline y u didnt call my cell, they say sir we have other customers too and we were too busy...
