Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

I'm on the 4th Chapter myself. I loved the 3rd chapter, contrary to what I heard a lot of people saying it was the worst. For people who have played Shadows of the Damned, would know how to associate some of the levels in the 3rd chapter. ;)

Anyway, I have maxed out my Vorpal blade, Pepper gun & Hobby Horse are on level 3, while I have kept the Teapot cannon on level 2. Chapter 3 sort of dragged for a very long time. It could have been shortened.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Oh well I was supposed to begin the game today but didn't happen due to other reasons. Will begin tomorrow morn.

Prepare yourself for a treat(Literally! there is a cake for you.:D) towards the end which i think only few games would offer.Atleast i havent seen such kind of thing in any other game.
anyways this is the best chapter.it has elements from ww and batman aa.

yes thats why i hated it its dragged too much.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Done! Completed the game and OMFG my thumb hurts. Will type my final thoughts later, but the game was kick-ass and the final boss battle was just as I excepted - challenging. :D

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Alright i am a bit lazy to post a full fledged review. But will try to cover most of the parts in a simple/lucid way.:)

Code:
But First please note that :-The views presented afore you are completely mine.

ALICE MADNESS RETURNS
gAmE mOdE :- Hard
Total PlAy tImE :- 14 hrs 30 mins

Well before i start let me quote (again) few lines from the ign review.

Alice: Madness Returns is an uneven journey of immersion that hits a lot of high points but constantly shows off its cracks
Alice: Madness Returns is a memorable peek through a flawed looking glass

As far as i am concerned those quotes are true!In fact the whole review can be concluded with that first statement only.

I tried very much to enjoy the game! But everytime i had my expectations high they were brutally shattered on the next level. Then again it rises and this goes on.

Alright lets jump into the game now !

Positive points

1.The story starts and concludes beautifully.
2.The visuals at most of the places are indeed admirable.
3.Fluid gameplay:-combat mechanics, platforming etc.
4.variations in levels. Some puzzles are quite good and fun to solve.
5.unique Art style in some levels.wonderland indeed has been beautifully made.
6.variety in enemies.

Negative points

Unfortunately here the game takes a huge hit.
1.There are some issues with the gfx.sometimes you can see the black border or outline of some objects or characters.
2.Though its rare but the fps does freezes for sometime at some levels.it is very very annoying when you are in middle of a fight or alice is sliding!
3.Repetitive levels.some levels are dragged too much to increase the time.
4.Improper save points. This is the most significant part which will irritate you the most. This makes the game very frustrating.
5.which collectible items unlocks which extra features are not mentioned.

Though i dont like ratings but if rating is that much important. Then i will rate this game the way it has been designed to be rated.(like i had mentioned this game has various ups and downs therefore heres how the rating has been done.)

The rating will be done on the chapter basis.
CHAPTER 1 Hatter's Domain :-7/10
CHAPTER 2 Deluded Depths :- 7/10
CHAPTER 3 Oriental Grove :- 5/10(Becomes too repetitive and boring from the next half.)
CHAPTER 4 Queensland :-8.5/10 (Best.better than others.)
CHAPTER 5 The Dollhouse :-5/10 (Too much dragged.)
CHAPTER 6 Infernal Train :-8/10 (nice boss fight to conclude!)

Guys please note that this game does not falls completely in the hack n slash genre! It depends too much on platforming.Around 90% of it is based on platforming. Most of the time you will find yourself deciding in which platform to jump to!

Common observation will say that the negative points are less compared to positive points therefore it should get a handsome rating.
Well the actual fact is that though the flaws are less in quantity but their height is so much that it managed to pull me out of the experience more than I would have liked.

Anyways FAQS:D

1.Should i buy this game?
A.First try borrow or rent a copy. Then download all the saves. Then play a bit of chapter 1, a bit from the middle of chapter 2 and and the starting of chapter 4 then you decide.

2.Is this game too much repetitive?or is it so bad?
A.No it is not that bad if you have lots of patience then do try it.

3.Which mode is best suited to play this game?
A:- Select nightmare if you have the above mentioned quality.

4.Is this game worth playing again.
A.as far as i am concerned no.Collecting extra items are not that much fun.

5.Is the story good?are boss fights good?
A.as mentioned it is proper and beautifully told.Only the gameplay kills it.
There is only one boss fight and that too towards the end.

6.Is it good for playing with a keyboard and mouse?Does it only supports xbox360 controller.
A.Though it has been made to be played with a controller. But keyboard and mose works fine! i completed it with kb and mouse.

It supports xbox 360 controller only. But if you have a generic ps2 type controller you can use that too using the xbox 360 hack. But note that you wont be able to change the keys.

Well atlast if you ask me for a rating then i will give:- 7/10

Hope this helps.if i have missed or mentioned anything wrong the do forgive and inform me.

thanks.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Finally, began the title sometime in the evening yesterday. I wish I had begun by Saturday but wasted a lot of time due to other engagements!

First impression - the campaign is LENGTHY! The profile now indicates close to 4 hours and 40 minutes and 36% game completion after concluding the second chapter. There are four more! :P

The visuals are pretty good (for a game based on UE 3.0) and the horrors of the fantasy wonderland have been beautifully modeled. Voice acting across all the characters is fantastic. And so are their respective designs reminiscent of the classic storybook. The storyline progression is awesome with Alice able to recall the past memories of hers during the gameplay with certain collectibles. And almost all the characters from the first title returns. The platforming in the game is pretty decent. The combat is good and Alice can use her trademark weapon - the vorpal blade, the pepper grinder (more like a mini-gun and even gets heated up!), hobby-horse and the clockwork bomb which also serves as a weight to activate certain portals. The biggest letdown of the game - save system. I happened to recall a couple of instances when Alice was spawned a long way back and had to spend a lot of time fighting through the same hordes of monsters. A patch could have addressed this issue.

Anyhow, folks who haven't played the first title have a chance to play it (including the save system!) albeit the graphics will be boring. Vorpal Blade has been upgraded to level 4, pepper grinder to level 2 and the hobby horse to level 2. Alice is now very agile with the blade, can execute the combo pretty quickly and finish the opponents sooner.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

@Quan: What was your strategy to defeat the Colossal Ruin? That was one of the most irritating enemy. Also excellent review. :)

Collosal ruin at first seems pretty hard.To be honest ethan i will admit that i was knocked out by it maybe more than 3 times.Later when i observed its moves i will say its very easy to defeat. Most importantly its fun to fight against him too rather than other enemies!

Trick i followed

1.keep hitting those doll heads from as far as you can with a pepper grinder.tea cannon level 2 also works fine.
2.when he comes to grab you dont run! just shrink. He wont be able to grab you then. Then try to move as far from him as possible. Now quickly engage autolock and keep hitting.
3.After all his heads smashed he will engage his last line of attack,he just runs behinds you breathing fire.keep running and when he stops just keep hitting him with the vorpal blade.
dont know about other modes but for me defeating him took a bit long!Though it was fun but the time it consumed was not justified.

My entire weapons were at level 4 except hobby horse.I think pepper gun's importance is even more than vorpal blade as far as i am concerned.

what was you favourite weapon ? mine was vorpal followed by pepper gun.teapot cannon is also good.vorpal and teapot good for closer and near enemies. pepper level 4 is good for far enemies.

Lol btw that cannot be told as review as it is almost vague its just my views.only covers on what basis i have rated it.:D thanks anyways.:D
@gannu in which mode you are playing? btw its nothing proceed further and see how the saves irritates you.:D

Now this is something I never tried or even thought of. I would never use shrink in combat. I would just keep dashing forward or perform multiple jumps. If the area was large, I could easily dodge him, if not, I would get caught and chewed off. :(

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

^^shrinking helps a lot in limited area space with multiple enemies.

Normal. :)

The save system is pretty pissing! I recall, once I had defeated a bunch of these icepots and card guards with spoons and forks and some molten lava thingy flowed over Alice and BAM! She is spawned way behind. Felt pretty pissed!

Oh and I faced one of those collosal ruins in Ch. 2. But he disappeared into the ground after took down some of the faces. :P

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

The third chapter was retarded! I think it took me close to 2 hours for completing it. :@

The level designs and platforming in the game are some of the best I've seen. I wish I could have taken some screenshots. Even the arcade levels were awesome though it made me a bit frenzy towards the third one. Upgraded all the primary weapons except the teapot cannon to level 4! :D

Reached the fourth chapter and the executioner is driving me nuts!

The first time he was spawned, I thought Alice could defeat him in some way or the other. Tried everything I could but na da. Then I thought may be I was supposed to bring down the chandelier. Didn't work either. Figured out that Alice had to escape from him! :ashamed:

ROFLMAO!

Alice just stomped the executioner! That sequence was damn funny!

Allwyn, QC - How long did it take you guys to complete the game? I am already 10+ hours into the game and completed almost half of Ch. 5. I seem to delve into each and every key-hole and access invisible platforms for those collectibles and teeth. :ashamed:

Btw upgraded all the primary weapons to level 4! The hobby horse is now super powerful and love using it more often than the vorpal blade.

read my views in the previous page.:D
my overall completion status was i think 77%.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Completed the game finally. The finale was awesome indeed! The game offered some of the best voice acting, level-design and character-design true to the concepts of the story. After almost a decade long gap for the sequel, American McGee has certainly lived up to his name. Here's hoping there is another installment sometime in the near future. :D

I'd give it a 8.5 on 10. Other than some levels which were a bit dragged and the ridiculous save points, this game is definitely a must play for those who love the adventure genre coupled with some hack-n-slash combat.

Clocked 13 hours and 24 minutes at 87% game completion. Had a surplus teeth of 1600 odd towards the end. :P

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

^^i am a big action adventure fan.:D but still i think the score you have given is too much for this game.
Then again its completely my view.:)

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

^Actually I quite loved the game thus the score. Kept me occupied for almost the entire week. :P

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Almost at the end of Chp 5. Man that "head scrolling(or whatever)" level in Chp 5 was horrid. Except from that everything is fine and well designed.

Finally completed the game. The game is not bad but not good either.Well an average game with nothing extraordinary but atleast value for money.:P

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

Just started with the game; finished hatter's hands level and really digging the dialogues. Looks like a really worth sequel :D Btw, was I supposed to get the hobby horse by now?

Re: Alice: Madness Returns [Multi-Platform]

^Nope. You will get it shortly. A weapon cannot be picked up before like that.
